| It's best we wait until the press conference, we can all surmise and point the finger but let's wait and see what reasons he has for leaving. I'm a bit saddened by this news, I thought we were making slow but steady progress which is what we all wanted, a sound financial footing and a competitive team on the field. I liked his style and how he came across, how he went about getting his point to the media, we were starting to get a bit more respect. Ah well, another sad day as a Trinity supporter, let's see what tomorrow brings.

| Quote ="Sandal Cat"I have read all the pages on this thread and other related threads and quite frankly I have no idea who is right or wrong or what to believe but to me its become irrelevant.
Brian Smith has gone. I loved listening to him speak and thought when he was appointed for this season it was the Clubs best appointment of the close season and that under Brian we would kick on. Unfortunately that will not be the case.
I do believe that if Michael Carter had not made the insipred decision to appoint him we would have been relegated and would not be having this debate. For keeping us in Super League Brian Smith will forever have my thanks and gratitude as does John Kear.
But similarly when Andrew Glover left the Club on the verge of administration I sat down with Michael and Chris Brereton and was shown the books, if you could call them that, and saw the extent of the debt we were facing. It would have been easy to just let the Club go into Administration again but the RFL had made that clear that we would be relagated to the Championship - I even wrote to the RFL about it and how they had assisted Bradford and was ridiculed on the Bradford Board and even had my address mentioned.
They were not prepared to accept relegation and Michael and Chris fought to pay all creditors, even putting their houses on the line to ensure that we retain our Super League status and for that they also will forever have my thanks and gratitude.
As I say, I don't know who to believe any more but don't care. All I know that is that Brian Smith has gone and all the best to him, Michael and Chris remain and we need to get behind them and whoever the new Head Coach is and keep on supporting this Club, which, whatever people are saying on here, we all love.
It's not easy being a Wakefield fan, but it never has been in all the 50+ years I have been assocaited with it.'"
Couldn't agree more with this post.
I was saddened with yesterdays news as I loved hearing Brian speak but seeing some slate MC also saddens me. All I can see is his hard graft and personal sacrifices for our club when nobody else was prepared to step up to the job and the club was clearly in a dire financial mess.
MC and all the club have my support.

I think the vast majority of posters on here acknowledge what MC and his sidekick have done and are doing for the club. I'm sure some comments made doubting them are borne out of pure frustration.
As a supporter of our club you get used to drama - unfortunately it never seems to end.

But, as a Leyther, I'm grateful that it has at last diverted the media circus away from Rowley and Brierley!
Good luck with the new appointment.

| MC & the team have done a wonderfull job no one can deny that if they had not come in when they did we would have been up the creek without a paddle so to me its down to coaches and players. By far the priority for me is to find someone whome all or the majority of the players will respect and perform for, if players and coach don't hit it off even when they are getting paid to do so then i am afraid it wont work, so to this end what worries me is will the players who came because BS was here respect the new coach. Maybe before making a final decision MC should consider asking the players if they are comfortable with the appointment.

| Must say that I am also saddened by Brian's unexpected departure .In addition to having a coaching CV of a very high standard he was a very professional 'frontman' for Trinity, gaining us respect in the RL world that had not been ours in a long while. Again this is echoing the thoughts of others, but I am also one who does not comprehend the bile being directed towards MC. What if he decides to say 'enough is enough'? Some will no doubt be ecstatic ,but will the same ones be still supporting the club when the then inevitable happens and we end up in championship 1?

| Brian Smith wrote this on his facebook wall. It's on public settings so I don't feel like I'm sharing something that shouldn't be shared:
[i"What a great night with the true believers of WTW!
Thank you one and all.
Bit of headache, sides still aching from lots of laughs. So many thank yous for sharing your own stories of love for a great old club.
For those who want to know I am on my way home to Oz.
My own health my family and those two lovely grandkids matter most to me.
Others may not understand but heading the coaching part of a footy club where costs are cut to the bone takes a huge commitment and loads of energy.
All coaches at every level count on support of all kinds to get the job done. That's when it's really fun and amazing things can happen - it happened at Hull FC and wow it happened at Bradford Bulls too.
Lots of people said very nice things about me then but the truth was it was the belief and commitment of the whole place that led to great successes.
You people who love WTW or are just footy lovers need to react before it's too late for a great old club.
Yes I believe it's that serious.
Ask better questions if you want to discover the REAL TRUTH."[/i

The last sentences are all very cryptic Brian! It would of been more helpful if he had said what he knows, rather than just leave us all scratching our chins!!!!

It looks lik Brian had a farewell party with a set of Trin fans prior to leaving. If so Brian suggests we ask "better questions". Do people who were there post on here or Facebook? If so, I will ask hopefully some better questions, what was Brian alluding to regarding "react before it's too late for a great old club, yes I believe it's that serious"? The club seem to be on an even keel financially so is he referring to finances or something else?
Does he believe that there is no "belief and commitment" at the club?
What exactly is the "real truth" as opposed to "the truth"?
It's a pity Brian had to go this route after leaving, it would have been better holding his own press conference and done a little whistleblowing surely?
So come on, Brian obviously wants this out in the open, if you were there show more backbone than Brian did and give us the complete picture.

| Long and short was that he wasn't used to working under the restrictions that coaching a club like Wakey brings with it. Nothing he requested was turned down, but some things that he would probably class as standard procedure maybe aren't at Wakey.
He was aware prior to taking on the job for the year, but i personally think he has now realised that at 60+ he probably hasn't got it in him anymore.
The big one now is who replaces him. The club have to get this right.
Has to be someone who commands the respect straight away, can get the best and more out of some average players and can sort our defence quickly. We cant expect to concede 30+ points per game and win matches.
John Kear or Glen Morrison for me. Outside of that, i would look at a total outsider, possibly Monaghan at Catalans (could bring his boots!!) who i think was quite close to getting it last time.
Chester for me would be almost like a Webster. I want someone who i know will give it to people when they aren't performing. We have no leaders on the park, so we need someone in charge who is maybe a bit more in your face and vocal and i just think Chris may be too nice for that.

| Presume that great night out was with the players to say goodbye and I think that BS was still caught up in the Euphoria of the MPG when he said yes I will come back for next season and when we get nearer the start of the season reality returns. We don't have money to throw around willy nilly and I applaud MC for not throwing money we don't have around the fact is BS knew this wasn't going to change any time soon. Talking with a work mate who is a Bulls fan last night and he said you cant knock Carter for his stance on finances he said look at us our financial trouble started when we had top players on top money and we threw money about willy nilly. He said the troubles did not come to light until much further down the line by that time we were paying the cost of getting a load of world class players. The only way we could change playing staff is by wheeling and dealing and sell some players we could sell young Johnstone in a flash he is that highly rated but we need to keep hold of him to help build a good side. I would ask how many players do we have that if we put a for sale sign on would command real good money in an instant including some of those BS said go sign or retain. One door closes another door opens onwards we keep going whoever ends up coach

My understanding is you are right about Monaghan, so must be a strong favourite.
I also agree about Chester and I believe is a friend of MC's so I don't see that working.
Personally I like John Kear, and would make a good director of Rugby, think he is a good fit with our club and it's the sort of situation he loves, (backs to the wall and all that).
Ideally with someone like Morrison as head coach, but that won't happen
So for me JK.

| I'm presuming he means that we won't speculate to accumulate, that we have a very conservative outlook. Given our history, that is no bad thing. He may have been at the helm at the birth of Bullmania, and they had some great years, but I seem to recall that one of their problems turned out to be that they spent all they accumulated from the speculation on further speculation (i.e., the money from the crowds attracted from the pre-match stuff was blown on further pre-match stuff).
We have two options for the future: gamble on success or live within our means. If that means cutting costs to the bone so we can spend a little more on players, then fine. We are not a club like Warrington who had good crowds when they were as rubbish as we were. I think the potential is in Wakey, but decades of disappointment is stopping them coming through the turnstiles.
If Yorkcourt buy Super Bowl and use Belle Vue to provide the community facilities then there is a future that is brighter. Low rent, a secure home in better facilities.

| He was also talking about basics like putting the heating on in the dressing rooms for the players.
I'd say it is as much about prioritising the cash as it is how much you give overall.

| It all reads that he couldn't cope with the reality of being at Wakefield.
When he came in last season, there was no time to plan anything, it was all about staying in SL.
Perhaps he thought we were better off (financially) than we were ?
A top coach will always try and put in a decent infrastructure and create the right environment for players to improve and nobody could blame him for this and although "no heating in the changing rooms" is not the b-all to everything, it is of course a symptom of the situation that he joined.
The most worrying comment is the reacting before it's too late which, although cryptic, is a very loaded comment.
All this certainly points to us needing a coach who is used to a tight budget, rather than someone who has been at a top club.
