One thing I will never agree with Latics fans on is their absolute devotion to Whelan. In reality it's the typical only football matters mentality that I despise about that sport and their fan base.

To be fair, he gifted them something that most football fans who live outside the fantasy cash bubble of the Premier League could only dream of. Before Whelan, nothing in Wigan Athletic's history merited Premier League action or a win at Wembley. They'd never been anything more than a 'make up the numbers' lower league club, playing in a run-down shed of a stadium in front of minuscule crowds, in a town that was totally dominated by rugby league.
Whelan bought them a completely different experience of sporting life.
It was never going to last, but it doesn't surprise me that they weren't the least bit embarrassed when he put up a statue to himself at the front of the DW.
In pointing this out, though, I'm not saying that if Latics disappear, it won't end up being our fault ... much like their failure to secure PL status before Whelan is also now our fault, or so those who claim to have been around in the 1980s insist.

Apart from his racist remarks? Or the absolute drivel the WEP used to lap up every week? One week he's saying Bruce is the next England manager and then a month later Bruce is the devil and the reason they are down in the relegation zone.
What about his sporting achievements? Imo the guys done more to divide the town down sporting lines than anyone - all for his (unsustainable) dream of PL footy.
His stewardship of our club was simply a PR stunt to paint himself as 'Mr Wigan'. Compare him to IL and the good he's done for us Vs the nose dive we had under Whelan and it's night and day. We saw deliberate SC breaches, a criminal lack of youth brought through, a relegation scrap and the club's reputation in tatters. Maybe that's why the Latics fans are so scared of IL as they've seen first hand what happens when you're placed number two in your owners affections
I'm also a Union fan and know many good people at Orrell who watched years of hard work go down the drain once Whelan had has his fill. Granted they took his coin, but like many others (including our own shareholders) they were sold a pipedream.
He's lauded for building a knock-off stadium on a known marsh land that needs the pitch digging up and replacing every 12 months. I suppose that doesn't matter to the football fans tho as it doesn't impact their season...
To top it all off he names the stadium after himself and sticks a statue out front.

They wouldn't, but I never said they would. I said one thing I'll never agree with them on is their devotion to the guy.
They are in the (partly down to him and his lofty ambitions), but they still fawn after him.
You'd hope the reasoned fans would also see the damage he's done to the town, but like I said all they care about is football.

I do find this 'holier than thou' attitude of some Latics fans amusing, slating Lenegan as a vulture for having the audacity to bid for the stadium at a knock down price during their hour of need.
They bought Euxton training ground from Bolton Wanderers for £2.5m a few years ago when Bolton were suffering a large unpaid tax bill.
Back in 2012 Bolton were looking to sell the ground for what they believed to be worth at £75m

Quote Coming from the BWFC Forums is a claim that Bolton Wanderers are close to selling their Euxton training ground for the (reportedly) hefty fee of £75 million.

Fully agree. Just been on twitter and someone was whinging that Euxton has been sold for reportedly 'less than a million'. He replied with "but we paid £2.2m for it".
Won't be happy when he finds out IL has only shelled out a fraction of what the DW was worth (£30m when new). Assuming the rumours of course.

They don't seem to be able to grasp that they've lost any negotiating power and that's why all their assets are being flogged for pennies in the pound. They're deluded.

They seem to think the administrators are there to save the club so are throwing crazy, libellous, things around.
Since many simply haven't learned the basics of what the administrators role is, I fear they will be quick to anger if their club disappears because nobody wants to sink yet more money into what is almost certainly a black hole.

THE JOINT ADMINISTRATORS WOULD LIKE TO PROVIDE SUPPORTERS WITH THE FOLLOWING UPDATE.
The Joint Administrators are calling a press conference on Thursday 27 August in the morning at a time to be agreed. This will be followed by a Zoom conference for those who cannot attend.
The Supporters Club will be invited to the conference and in the light of all the social media comments on Sunday we are quite happy for 10 members of the supporters club to attend and we will give them a special session to deal with their questions and answer them as far as we can. We stress that they must be members of the Supporters Club and sign in as usual when they get to the ground.
On 1 July 2020, Paul Stanley, Gerald Krasner and Dean Watson of Begbies Traynor were appointed joint administrators. All communications should be c/o Begbies Traynor. Please contact the joint administrators either by phone on 0333 009 6869 or by email at

The holier than thou act is laughable. When Bolton were in the financial proverbial creek without a paddle, they couldn’t get enough of it. Lapping it up, rubbing it in. And now it’s happened to them they get all offended when a Bolton fan gives it them back.
Dont give it if you can’t take it.

It's what we did with Saints when they were struggling and they did to us witj Central Park. It's rivalry.

Wonder who the 10 people are who will be invited to the Zoom call?
Would love to have some eyes/ears in there.
When you say
"Latics fans quite rightly feel angry at how this has come about. It sounds dodgy as"
Are you referring to the original placement into administration or what the administrators have done throughout that process?
If it's the former then I'm not sure why? They were losing best part of 15million a year, you may question why they bought it because those loses had been building and it would have been in the books but if your losing that much it's no surprise they want to drop it asap.
If it's the latter, I'd be Interested to know why you feel Latics fans would be aggrieved at what the administrators have done?

You're correct. However all this anger should be thrown in the direction of the previous owners. They've been sold down the river.
News on the stadium has yet to be confirmed, assume this will happen after tomorrows press conference. If (as expected) IL is to takeover the ownership then I expect a full and detailed plan of his objectives, he has no hatred of the football club do I see no surprises at all. Latics will play out of the stadium in League One when the new season starts allowing them to consolidate and build from there.

I’m pretty sure if Lenagan does buy the stadium that he must have some assurance Latics will survive. Many of the Latics fans are making him out to be a vulture yet any move to buy the ground will help Latics survive because it sounds like there’s no buyer for the club prepared to stump up for the stadium as well as the team and it’s other assets. Lenagan is a businessman and he will absolutely need Latics playing at the stadium to make it work and they’ll lose nothing but the overheads of running the stadium in this deal. I support both clubs and don’t really care who owns the stadium, I just want to have both clubs playing under the same roof and working closely together. The division I see between both sets of supporters is pretty sad, especially at a time like this when there really are bigger things to worry about.

| I imagine the only changes we'll see are there will be more rugby internationals and CC semi-finals played at New Central Park, possibly a couple of rounds of behind closed doors fixtures and that statue of Whelan will find an alternative location.
Oh, and the new Tenants will change their fixture date if there's a clash.
