Ive recently purchased a 1980s era Wigan Rugby League shirt (One too add to my many collections) and on the back of the shirt is the number 6. I have reason to believe the shirt is from the 1984/1985 era in which we used against Hull in the challenge cup.

Could anybody confirm who the number 6 stands for and what era it is from

It's not from the challenge cup. They had 3/4 sleeves. Kenny was the stand off for some of '85

Count to number of cherry hoops on it's sleeve compared to the number of cherry hoops on the kenny shot in 'the surgeons' link above.

Sorry to disappoint but I'd be very surprised if it was a players shirt at all particularly with a 40" chest.

The length of sleeves were a players personal choice. In that final the forwards wore long sleeves, and Edwards wore short sleeves.

I can confirm it isn't the Kenny cup final shirt. My mum won that in the late 80's at an event organised by Colin Clarke. Being but a foolish child I wore it to train in and it some how got lost. Regret it to this day!

Edwards infact used to tear the sleeves off short. Check the 85 video and you'll see there's no hem on his shirt.

It isn't a players shirt, its an Umbro replica.

Andy Gregory used to do something with his shirt sleeves as well. It looked like he rolled them up inside, but he perhaps tore them off as well ?

I always thought the player shirts had the umbro badge sewn in black. I may be wrong.

The umbro badge was embroidered in red on the shirt front, and, on some kits, the sleeves.The 88 Wembley kit (IIRC), had some black embroidery on the umbro 'diamond'.

Hi I'm Roy and my specialist subject is Wigan kits of the 80's and their embroidery.

I have two originals from 85 that didn't have jjb on, sure that was 87 onwards that this appeared.

Nightmare. That's the RL equivalent of losing the Turin Shroud. A precious relic gone forever.



Please tell me you haven't also lost Radders shirt from the 2002 final?

forget radders shirt....it's the boot from under the ball that "crafty Pig......cunning ham" was trying to ground that is akin to the "foot of God" that needs to be preserved....
