Your above critisism resembles the same reasons we have been witnessing for decades at Salford. So you're quite right, the people of Salford won't turn up for Sale matches.
Well at least they're getting off their backsides and marketing their product unlike us.

| lost again, I feel ashamed that we are linked with such a bunch of losers, they are giving Salford a bad name, hopefully people reading the BBC site won't realise that they don't play in Stockport anymore. Perhaps Sale's poor play is all about solving the traffic congestion problem?

| Still managed to pull in over 8000 though according to the BBC website. That said, we all know about the different attendances being announced.

| I went to the Sale game tonight with some free tickets from my daughters school... There was a good crowd on there and I actually thought it looked more the 8,000 announced.... The tickets we had were in the west stand... in block W02... which is about level with the 10 yard line... and were priced at £33 each. How people can pay that much and more to watch that is seriously beyond me. I've never been so frustrated in all my life... and the thing is... when I'm throwing my arms up in the air at yet another pointless kick... they actually think it's a good thing... and there was even a sin binning for a knock on... and they think that's right and fair. A very odd sport.

| I stumbled across the match on Sky last night. I'd agree that there were a good 8000 in attendance, though why they pay to watch that sport is beyond me. In the few minutes I watched I saw numerous knock ons missed, too many blokes the wrong side of 20 stone and one point I think the ball may have emerged from under a pile of bodies. And don't get me started on the number of penalties. Well done Loyal Fan, you deserve a medal for endurance...

| Keeping up an impressive one try per game average. Would it be un-neighbourly for Salford to base their new season marketing activity (stop laughing) around the theme of seeing proper rugby entertainment in Salford.

I would imagine "sponsor a try" wouldn't raise very much at Sale
Salford's new strapline "See more tries in a match than a Sale season"

| I watched about 10 minutes and then my eyes started to bleed
At one stage in the game there were 16 phases and they had moved about 5 metres.
OUR ground however looked very good on telly with the East stand full.
There were around 8K there looking from the TV but my son who works in the ticket office said the scanners had it as 6K

A question to which the answer is difficult to find but could be very powerful in marketing terms.
My guess is it's cultural. That crowd will be mostly male, employed, lower-middle class, who have been involved with RU all their lives at clubs, university etc. They go because they can watch the highest (bar international) standard of the game fairly locally but above all its a social thing. There's just a rugby-union 'type' of person isn't there and not many top-level clubs around up here for them to follow.

Really, anybody who as supported Salford in the past would be interested, why would any youngster from Sale Alrincham or even our own city be interested in a club like ours,it as nothing to offer.Miles out of the heart of the city,an unatmospheric concrete smelly craphole that produces performances off the field that stinks like the farm close by.Don`t look at it now look in 5 10 years time, what Salford kids are going to be attracted to that dump to support this team. Its a complete and utter balls up created by MR Salford and mugs like you and me for letting it happen.

I dated someone from Sale once who's sister often took her kids to the Willows and know that other youngsters from the school attended games so there is obviously interest in that area. I've often thought that if someone looked at Wythenshaw there would be interest, it's not the wealthiest area so a cheaper friendlier alternative to football might appeal.

| You lot are so obsessed with Sale.....14 post pages. I'd be far more worried about the state your once "well run, debt free club" is. Most clubs have posted lists of retained or new players, nothing from your camp.
A statement made over two weeks ago stating new investors would be announced, yet nothing. The companies accounts not yet filed and yet your harking over whether or not Wythenshaw can add to your fan base.
Worrying times for one of our former great rivals.

| I'm not sure I understand the point about Wythenshawe here. Because it's a poor area, people should support Salford? Seems like you're putting Salford down there.
Wythenshawe is a Football area. It's a 49/49 split in favour of United and City and then the other 2%......Sale. I know this, being a Wythenshawe Sale fan. Lots of Wythenshawe folk get on my coach from Brooklands station to Salford City Stadium. Wythenshawe is nowhere near Salford, however part of Wythenshawe and Sale share the same boundaries. Brooklands, where Sale FC play (Heywood Road - where Salford U16s or something play) is in both Wythenshawe and Sale. Wythenshawe and Sale are also in the same boundaries when it comes to voting and stuff. We're just Sale's poorer Cousin. A sign was recently put up saying "Welcome To Brooklands, Wythenshawe" on Altrincham Road. That's sure to p!ss off those folk trying to sell their fancy houses on Brooklands Road.
In fact, Heald Green residents recently voted to get a sign taken down at their train station as it had Wythenshawe Town Centre on the platform signs. A few years ago Northenden folk were outraged because of the same thing. A sign said "Welcome To Northenden, Wythenshawe". That one was a bit odd as it's actually in Wythenshawe. They'd rather they were associated with neighbouring Didsbury.
So I'm not sure you'd want your club associated with here. You'd get looked down on more than you would for attending a Sale game Speaking of which - saw 2 lads with Salford City Reds shirts at the last game of ours. Heroes in my eyes. No doubt they got a kicking when they left the ground though.
Before I get a telling off for a geography lesson, I was just confused as to why an area 10 miles away would be targeted as a Salford City Reds area. Most people in Wythenshawe wouldn't even know what Rugby is. In fact, they wouldn't know what Football was outside of the Premier League. You never saw a blue shirt around here for years and now City have won the league they wear nothing but the things, even if it's raining. Whenever I get a taxi to the station, the taxi driver never knows who Sale or Salford are. They only start to know what I'm talking about when I tell them it's that new ground off the motorway.
Edit - I understand what you meant. A cheaper alternative. It's a good point but then with 75000 people, in theory Wythenshawe Town or Altrincham FC would be getting some of their money every week. They don't though. That's what I was getting at with the Premier League thing.
Edit 2 - I assure you I don't say "folk" that often in real life

Agree with most of you comments,i m o,you really have to be brought up in whichever code you end up watching.be it through your parents, mates or more importantly through the school you attend which play that game you prefer.also tv is a massive influence,be it with the challenge cup and your local team being involved or that crap served up every year called the six nations which i might add gets more publicity than even football. My love of RL began with my old feller taking me to the willows to watch the likes of Harry Council,Charlie Bott ,Jack Brennan,Paul Murphy, and the famous Ernie Critchley the willows manager. The team was crap,The likes of Swinton were then the big boys, and what a team that was, half time at the willows the players would walk around the ground with a blanket for you to throw your coppers in i suppose to pay them for their efforts, myu mates and i used to follow behind and pick up the halfpennies and pennies that had missed the blanket. Then came along you know who and changed our club into the finest most exciting team i have ever witnessed, and then along came you know who, them days will never return for a multitude of reasons but in my eyes the biggest one is moving from the old lady, that was criminal,to deny the fathers and sons and daughters walking to our yes our beloved Willows on a Friday night or even a Sunday afternoon to a desolate stadium that is`nt our home.I ask one question, would the chairman be looking to sell if his baby looked like succeding. In my eyes he sold Salford for the corporate dollar.
