Quote ="JEAN CAPDOUZE"For those who may be wondering what all the fuss is about, watch this video of Catalans vs Bradford. In the opening minute Escare runs the ball 85 metres to score a try. He beats the Bradford full back Lee Gaskell pointlessly with a feint change of direction to the right, a swerve to the left, and pace.
Later in the video Escare backs up a break to score another.
Note that the second Catalan try is scored by Eliot Whitehead after a Catalan bomb is allowed to bounce by the Bradford full back Lee Gaskell. (This is the same Lee Gaskell who is preferred to Escare by FlexWheeler and other clowns on this forum).

How's his defence?

| Quote ="steadygetyerboots-on"Escare is typical of a lot, if not all, junior/young backs coming through in the last 5 years or so in that he looks good putting the ball down over the line or going on a mazy broken field run, but when asked to do the real tough stuff they don't seem as interested.
He's good, but I wouldn't put him in the top 5 fullbacks in SL. As with most things though, this could change.'"
The tough stuff is not his problem. He does so well in scoring tries because he is very fast and evasive, and because he is always following the ball in attack, to either break the defensive line himself or follow and back up another player breaking the defensive line.

Your selection of full backs ahead of Escare takes no account of the Opta stats on actual performances.
BTW there is no Hardacre in Super League. There is however a man named Hardaker.

I have already given the data on that in an earlier post.
His average number of tackles per game is 6 and his average number of missed tackles is 2.

So he misses on average 1 third of the tackles he makes or is the 6 tackles made actually successful tackles? If so he would miss a quarter of his tackle attempts. Still poor for your team's last line of defense.

In attack Shaul and Escare are very similar. However Shaul is a decent tackler and great under a high ball, Escare isn't.

| Full back is more than attack and one on one defending, its about organising the line and seeing threats, escare and shaul have a lot to learn in that dept add eden into that bracket too.

You're really dining out on that Bradford game. We've had clips of tries, this thread, and the fact he didn't drop a bomb.
Whoopdy dooo.
Bradford are terrible and little can be deduced about his ability from that.
Is escare one of the top 2 fullbacks in the league?
No, he isn't.
Hardaker lomax and grix are better IMO.

That I do agree with.
But it looks like he has seen Webb off, which makes him a good player in my eyes.
Whether he is better or not that anyone else, I am not really bothered ! as long as he keeps doing what he does for us I am happy.

Major myth, Escaré is very good under the high ball most of the time, similar to a certain S. Tomkins in size, the kid makes up for his petit build in energy and effort. He's a breath of fresh air at the Dragons and to be honest his try tally in a misfiring side speaks volumes to anyone willing to listen.

| With his try against Widnes tonight Morgan Escare has scored 14 tries and thus climbed to equal (with Tommy Makinson) top try scorer in Super League.

It's true already, he's a good player and knows his way to the try line but isn't as strong in defence as any on my list.
He has good speed and footwork but anything other than a clear run to the line or the space to use his footwork ends in him being tackled because he lacks the strength of those on my list.
Quote ="JonB95"Major myth, Escaré is very good under the high ball most of the time.'"
That's a contradiction, if you're only good under the high ball "most of the time" then by definition you're not good under the high ball!
Quote ="JonB95"similar to a certain S. Tomkins in size'"
He's nothing like similar to Sam Tomkins, who despite being slim is all muscle and sinew and deceptively strong and explosively powerfull due to his conditioning, apart from that Tomkins is significantly bigger than Escare.
Look, I like Escare, he's great to watch and is an exciting prospect but 2nd best full back in SL NO!
Maybe in the future after he's rounded his game and improved a lot he might become the best fullback in SL but he's a long way off that right now.

Take it from a fan who knows Morgan well and sees him on a regular basis. I'm not saying he is necessarily 2nd best as I don't judge players that way but he deserves far more credit than you give. Every full back has their moments under the high ball and from what i have seen Morgan is similar to the likes of Tomkins and Slater on that front.
His positioning in Catalans attacking moves is also exceptional as well as his explosive speed off the mark, these combine to contribute to his outstanding try tally - if he was English he would be hailed as the second coming of Jesus Christ.

| And his try against Warrington near the end of the game the other week? Could the other full backs on your list do that? Was that just Morgan using his 'footwork and pace'? I would stop watching rugby league it it was just a contest of strength and muscularity.

And Joel Monaghan.
If only try scoring was the only factor.
He's also missed more tackles than any other full-back too unless you count Jarrod Sammut's experiment at full-back.

Morgan's problem is that he is so small and light (73 kg), so he has a hard time in one on one tackles against 100 kg or more opponents. If only he could bulk up a little (even 5 kg) he might do better.
But Morgan is not just a try scorer: he also has more try assists than any other full back.
