According to the Sheffield board, the four games are a one off with the total aggregate scores added together to decide whether the Championship or LER are winners. Not sure who gets the prize money in that case, presumably the winner of the Featherstone vs Lezignan game?

I'd have had two groups of four, top of each in the final and played during the NRC. The 4 British teams to get a bye past the NRC group stages. Minimal disruption to the usual schedule.

Yeah, but then you'd have to consult with the French first, so that they could leave gaps in the season to slot these games in. That would mean that you'd have to plan a few months ahead. Not the way we do things round here.

Why do they?

Play a 'European Challenge' game the week after the LER finishes - French Grand Final winner versus the previous season's Championship Grand Final winner. Venue to alternate between each country, preferably at a venue that can be announced in advance but still ensure the best possible prize fund. Travel expenses shared between the RFL and French RFL with £20,000+ prize pot for the winners.

Because the effects of travel costs and reduced gates for the European games are even worse than for the NRC.

Personally, I'd have had three or five clubs involved from each country and the winner's who wins most.

Prize money - I heard £20000 - split between the four winners. Home teams have to pay for the visitors' hotels and travel. I'm glad we're away.

And surely an NRC game against third tier teams isn't going to bring out many fans (home and away)? If marketed right, they could be much bigger games.

In groups of 4 , you would only play 3 games , so 2 clubs would only get 1 home game

Plus as has been pointed out , nobody is interested in playing the French , Toulouse in the Championship showed that

As Leyther Matt has suggested , the only cross channel matches at our level should be a Championship champions V the French Champions , it should be part of the reward for both clubs winning their respective competitions
