Quote The Bulls received a helping hand from an unlikely source this week – Leeds supremo Gary Hetherington.
Coach Francis Cummins and football and media manager Stuart Duffy met Rhinos chief executive Hetherington on Monday at Headingley to discuss matters related to player recruitment, dealing with agents and negotiating contracts.
Duffy, who like Cummins arrived at Odsal after a long association with Leeds, explained: “It was a general discussion about what we do in the game and how it’s run.
“Francis and I have taken a lot on in the football department and we obviously want to look at how other clubs do things.
“The new owners are focused on turning the business around and Franny and I are taking care of the football side of the club.
“Gary Hetherington has run a successful model at Leeds over a number of years and is just one of a number of people we will be talking to in the next few weeks as we look to get the Bulls back to the top again.
“Gary was very free with his time and his advice as he explained how things are done at Leeds with regards to football and some of the business side of the club.”
While the Bulls have agreed a twinning partnership with Dewsbury Rams, Leeds have struck a similar arrangement with Hunslet Hawks.
Duffy added: “We spoke to Gary about how Leeds’ partnership works and we’ll continue to seek best practices from other clubs.”'"
I wonder if he could help at the moment with a tribunal of a former player who's tries join a local rival but said player is still sort of connected to the club, but isn't...

haha... i'm pretty sure he does have experience in that department... and with a rather good track record
That said, for all his faults over the years he has run a successful ship over at Sheadingley and to give us his time like this is a commendable act.

| I think most of superleague should book themselves in for a chat with the Leeds club. In these times of sugar daddies and spending beyond your means, they seem the one shining light about how to run a sustainable and successful club from top to bottom. They have defined wage structures and a shrewd chief.
When I say the above to my dad he practically disowns me but putting aside the traditional sporting rivalry, there's a fair bit to admire about Leeds. If Franny can use his huge experience at Leeds to get tips then that's fantastic imo.

Well the Bulls certainly paid for it in the recent past! Massive guilt complex on his part, If the Club hadn't had to part with the Harrisgate money. The old regime would have survived, but hey ho on we go!

Well, Leeds do have Caddick, sitting in the back room and signing the cheques. I appreciate that many Rhinos reckon he's really a Tykes fan and think he does little for the Rhinos, but it's difficult to extricate either from the 'Leeds rugby Ltd' whole, so I guess much of his financial input does benefit the Rhinos and it's not [ijust[/i a super efficient business set up at Headingley which is bringing home the bacon.

I think a certain amount of 'hatred' maybe focussed a little to the South this year, rather than the East.

They;re not really legitimate faults to be honest. just think in the past he could have handled a few things in a different manner. For many years he came across (and still does on occasions) as a bit pompous and self righteous.
However, the help he's given over the last year has to be credited.

Finding our feet is what we are doing.
There is much that can be learned from communication with others that are already on their feet, in particlarly Leeds who have damn large feet stood 4 sqaure on solid ground.
Why would Leeds offer the Bulls advice on a whole range of issues?
Perhaps he is more savvy to the competative nature needed in SL than next year's fixtures seem to be from the lower teams. (No disrespect to any team)
SL clubs will have to work together, share expertise, and management knowledge otherwise we could end up with fewer teams in SL than optimum.

Not disagreeing with any of that. The error is in framing of the picture and the message it sends out about both the level of expertise within the club, and the relative status of each club.

I've never had anything but admiration for Hetherington, even when he was my old clubs South Yorkshire rivals. He has shown he can coach & he can also be an astute & ruthless businessman. He is RL through & through, despite his necessary involvement with the Takes. I went to a RL in Literature discussion a few years back, he was the only senior RL figure there in the audience (apart from Bullseye).

| I am glad we are seeking advice from a successful club, and Leeds' successes do deserve praise. But lets not forget that Leeds have several advantages over the other Superleague clubs. Leeds is a vibrant area with two very good universities, and several very nice, affluent suburbs and satellite towns. the "Leeds City region" is named such because Leeds as a city is a place that is thriving!
It is the only true Big City club in Superleague, that does not have more than one SL club in it! That means there are more people to target. Add to that the partial demise of Leeds UNited over the last 10 years and there are lots of people to target.
Having said all that, its pretty cool in this day in age that GH and his organisation have been there when we needed them this last 8-9 months! from advice, to gate money, to line paint!

| How can two relative novices (in the business side of things), employed by a man who is a novice in RL terms, seeking advice from the most successful club of the last 5 yerars, who both were once employed by, be anything other than goood?
If we had taken a leaf out of their book sooner, we might have avoided the crisis!
We should know our place! At the moment we are nowhere near Leeds in Rugby or Business terms. We need to close that gap in both aspects of ther operation. Publicising this isnt a problem for me, as it shows that efforts are being made to rectify a shortfall in knowledge. This can only benefit our club long term. Even if it is from Leeds!

This.
Especially the leaf in the book which said "Oy, you can't sign Harris!", perhaps?
Across the board, the worst kind of person to have working for you is the person who thinks they already know it all, even after 2 minutes in the job, and who steadfastly refuses to take advice from anybody. I really don't understand why anyone would have a problem with it.

The advice isn't the point. From a marketing perspective it's a dreadful piece which casts the club in a negative light.

No, that's your view, not some sort of fact. In my opinion, I really don't see the problem. It's just a snippet anyway which will be dead and buried by Monday. I would see it as almost totally irrelevant to marketing.

It's flattering that you feel compelled to differentiate between my 'views' and 'fact' but I'm not sure there's any need. For clarity, I'm not relying on tested hypotheses but as someone put a post up I thought we could discuss the merits of the article.

I see what you are saying, but who are these blue chip companies who are going to be put off by FC talking to the Rhinos? From my experience most sponsorship comes from local companies having a fan of the team on the BoD. That & the desire to be associated with a successful club. It's hardly Microsoft asking Apple for advice.
