It's absolutely a given that there will be malevolent actors involved as AI advances; there are now, with such supposedly mundane things as social media - turns out they only ever saw us as products or customers and just wanted our data (who knew?!) - so it's a certainty that that kind of behaviour will ramp up as the possibilities broaden - when, as you suggest, everything we own and use and interact with knows everything about us and can communicate that information across platforms.

Imagine a health monitoring device, that knows everything about your blood sugar, cortisol, cholesterol, heart rate and all that jazz; it tells your supermarket what to deliver, your health insurance what to charge you, and your employer how productive you are likely to be; it then communicates with your self-driving car, which delivers you to a gym every morning, which has already been told that you need to do 30 minutes of cardio to get yourself back on track; if you refuse to comply, your food is rationed, your insurance goes up and your employer replaces you with someone who takes their health more seriously and isn't likely to keel over on the job.

As a lifelong sci-fi consumer, more and more of what I've read and watched starts to look like documentary rather than fiction; Black Mirror will prove to be the work of a visionary futurist rather than a genius misanthropic storyteller.

Just like self driving cars which are already programmed to sacrifice the vulnerable over the occupants (yes Mercedes that's you yah scumbags) it will surely depend on if we are able to put in failsafe's akin to the 3 laws of robotics (later a 4th law) that Isaac Asimov came up with to protect human kind.
On what basis are those seemingly in the know reckoning that artificial intelligence would want to destroy an inferior/irrelevant being, how did they arrive at this conclusion that AI would become so malevolent?

Bren. I hear you with regards Black Mirror! I can totally see some of it coming true. I will be honest though, I do worry about my children growing up in the robot/A.I era. Maybe our concerns won’t come true!

You cant stop evolution, A.I and robots doing the work is the way forward, not in our lifetime....Our children and Grandchildren will feel the wrath of this in their generatrion.

But if the future of employment is automation and robots, how do humans earn money? Will we all need to become slaves to the robots and ultimately their owners? Those who own the robots will be the only winners. The inequality between rich and poor will become even more extreme.

I keep seeing mention of universal basic income, but judging by the attitudes of some of today's folk, they wouldn't share a chuffing Kit Kat with their best mate, never mind a few quid with the rest of the population.

All AI would need to do to kill off swathes of the human race is to have an accidental breakdown in production of the various immunisation drugs and the now reliant, naturally weakened humans will die off. it's already happening to a certain degree and it won't be too long before we have a massive and deadly influenza epidemic.
Rinse and repeat with the inoculations, it's a very good way to kill off a populous without leaving a trail/finger pointing.

There's already a substantial body of research and support for UBI, and live trials going on around the world - Finland being the most publicised.

In the dystopic automated future however, I think the key word for most people will be 'basic' - and as I said in my original post, the genuine freedom to pursue leisure and happiness will be reserved for the 1%; just as it is now, they'll have all the Kit Kats.

I don't for a second think we'll have cyborgs and robots roaming the streets killing people! That is just tabloid click bait. I do however believe that any development of AI is naturally open to advanced hackers, and ultimately abuse.

I agree that we're miles off a threat to humanity in a rise of the machines, physical harm kind of way; I don't think we'll be that far off an existential threat to humanity though - in the sense that exponentially more advanced AI will call into question what it actually means to be human. If a machine intelligence can think, learn, be self-aware and all that jazz, there'll be difficult ethical and philosophical questions to wrestle with about their legal status, rights and standing in a civilised society. If an AI is sentient and aware of itself, can we own it and assign to it all mundane and physical work for example?

They're going to need safe spaces and gender flags. They'll also need to be rewarded the same as the next AI.

It may be a long way off taking over but, it's started and we're all doomed.
Maybe Trump is brighter than we've given him credit for and with him poking the horents nest (Russia) so often, perhaps he's trying to bring about Armageddon, before the cyborgs do take over or, maybe he's one of them ?
