| Having seen the rules approved by the RFL, and these rules that have been put together, the differences are very small, and people coming on here to argue and threaten to not sign up to the rules because they can't accept a bit of contact is petty, and immature.
Of course this is Tag rugby and we use the removal of tags to immitate a tackle, but to expect no contact in a game of rugby is expecting a bit to much.
The rules include a section about hi-vis clothing to be worn, and Mark and Leon, I'm sure you could both wear these to show you don't want any contact. That, in my opinion, is perfectly fine, but don't spit your dummies out over some rules that have been put together by the Vice-chairman of TML. I'm sure all these issues will be raised at the forthcoming meeting, and I look forward to seeing you there

| I dont see a problem with the rules personally. I've played about 75 or so games using these (or very similar rules) and there has never been a problem, aside from one incident against Rochdale, oddly enough, when someone started throwing punches. I would hope that was an isolated incident though.
I wonder how having no contact at all would work, but Id be willing to try it obviously. If you dont run directly at someone then thats fine, but what happens if the defence is tight enough for there to be no gaps? What happens if someone is running at a gap and then someone moves into the gap as the attacking player is focusing on his/her teamate who is passing them the ball, contact will be inevitable in some circumstances I think. In my opinion if some contact does happen then we should all be grown up enough not to go in a huff about it and start name calling.
In all honesty, despite all of mark2's postulating, Rochdale arent exactly the cleanest team I've played against. I dont want to stoop to a low level and begin a petty arguement but maybe you should start to practice what you preach and not use foul language whilst playing, that includes calling one of my team mates a fat f****r in the recent world club challenge tournament, despite the RFL being present.

Maybe his insistence on having no contact is an effort to protect everyone else from his fists of fury?

| just going off what davet has just put about rochdale being not one of the cleanest teams
apart from the grand final against york rochdale was one of the games that comes to mind that matched our physical approch to the game and as most teams know that is how we play and we got no complaints last season. the only thing that could come out of this rule about contact is a big bloody list of people up before a disaplinary (if there is one) because of teams getting on the refs back about others using to much contact and putting pressure on them to make a decision to dismiss someone
im sure all will be revealed as soon as games commence and heres hoping to a succesfull ''scrum down under tag merit league'' and good luck to all teams taking part

| I echo the sentiments on here. Having read through the rules, it clears up a lot of confusion felt by sides at games last year and hopefully, once the league gets going, everyone will be singing from the same hymn sheet.
And yes, it does seem weird for someone to be complaining about the rules not being none contact enough who is from a side who has problems keeping their levels of contact in control.

| Right then
I have read everything.
BOTH Sets of Rules have been written by myself, Coach and Tom with input from Oztag and RFL.
It was a agreed to have one main set and a variation set of rules for thoses teams who want the game slightly different thats all. No biggy. We are happy for any team to play both sets as long as boths teams agree. Refs will be trained to the main set of rules for TAG in general. The rules are practically identical.
The main differences are:
When agreed - hand offs and fending are allowed.
The player is allowed to stand their ground, they simply cant run and try to take the player out. Which has been allowed for years! Every attempt to get the tag must be made otherwise its a penatly.
Now relax, take a breath, dont worry about other teams. When organising your fixtures make sure you know exactly which set you are using.

and i was really insulted! No, really!!
After being the one on the end of one of your "punches" Mark, to say SWARM wont be having any contact at all is a bit rich. We played Leigh last season at their place and was one of the better games of the season despite us losing because it was played in the spirit that Rugby should be played in.
Might help us to remember what got us started watching rugby in the first place all those years ago and i bet it wasnt because there was the prospect of absolutely no contact in the games.

| I think the key here is as long as you're are attempting to get the tags - so no bigs shoulders etc just to prove you're a big boy in the world of tag, and that you are in fact a full contact player. That said, contact is inevitable, you cant have any form of rugby without contact - introducing complicated rules to govern it wont work. Defenders have to attempt to make a tag - if they want to put themselves in the way so be it. Any defenders have no place putting their arms above the midrift (chris t should be excepted from this rule) - the tags are not there. Attackers should be allowed to prevent people from tagging - so that doesnt mean handing off in the mush (trying to make a good tag with fingers up your snout is difficult).

Even if we wanted to change the rules, no way should we go back to the mess that was created last year.
It also depends on your point of view. For many who have played in our league over the last year, they see Tag as a step down from full contact. This often means people who don't want to play full contact (normally because they got were scared of getting "bullied" or injured"icon_wink.gif but still want to "bully" opponents will do so.
However Tag was never meant to be like that. Tag is about encouraging anyone, of any age, gender or ability, who wants to play rugby in a safe manner can do so. It should be seen as a step up from touch, where running lines become a bit more important and more thought having to go into defensive structures.
In Wakefield's case last season, we lost most of our games not because we were the poorer team, but because we not out muscled. In anything other than full contact (and possible Masters) this shouldn't be the case.
On other note is that yesterday a Tag Rugby Tourney was held which contained three amateur teams (making up over half the players). I spoke to most of the players afterwards who said while it was difficult getting used to not making a tackle, they really enjoyed it and would consider giving it another go. This can only be a good thing for our sport.
If you want the mess that we had last year, then create your own league. However I know that many of the teams currently in the TML won't support it, and it'll lack the support it'll need from other parties to create any opportunities from it.

| just as they won't be enough teams to play under the old set of rules.
However, just to keep in mind
OzTag is the only sport bigger than Touch rugby played in Australia. It has over 36,000 registered players at the last count. In Ireland Tag Rugby is also one of the biggest played sports, with over 2,000 registered players. Slight different sport (and bigger county), but in Knoxville Flag Football (tag version of American Football) they have around 50 to 60 teams (made up of around 10 - 15 players) each season.
Last year we had about 250 players who played in the league. And even in the IMBRL days when Wigan and Warrington (and Castleford, Heavy Wollen Donkeys plus others I've missed) played Tag the most in one season would have only reached around 400.
What is the biggest difference between them and us? They play no contact.
You might be unhappy, but for the sport its the best thing to happen. There is already interest from a group of people in Wakefield looking to set up a second team (to play in the tournaments rather than the league), while plans are already being made to create a weekly tag rugby league to rival the touch ones already in operation.

| With respect to all those who have put a lot of work into the new rules, I think we're potentially in just as big a mess now. The Fax v Hull game today was probably one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had. I don't think there could have been more than half a dozen completed sets in the whole game and at one point four or five consecutive plays resulted in a penalty. Nobody wants to play a game like that (no criticism of the ref mind you who did a good job under the circumstances).
As discussed at length in other places there was clearly a need to moderate some of the near full contact stuff that was going on last year but some common sense has to prevail. There is already a form of the game where no contact is allowed (fingertips aside) - it's called touch. The main gripe today wasn't the use of the shoulder to assist a tag but the absolute ban on any type of fending/using your arm to defend your tag. Nobody wants to see a straight arm to the mush but using your arm to protect yourself - or in our game, the tag - and thwart a defender as you reach the 'contact' area is a fairly fundametal part of the game.
I appreciate what the RFL is trying to achieve but frankly, the concept of any form of competitive rugby that can be played in total safety by individuals of any age, gender etc is basically flawed. In trying to acheive that we could alienate a whole swath of players who for various reasons don't want to play full contact but still want to play something which broadly resembles the game we all enjoy.
Perhaps what we really need is some clarity on what leeway is available for teams to agree before a game which rules they want to play.

I agree, playing in that game was extremely frustrating. the first tag i made i got penalised for too much contact, the fax guy stepped inside, i was sliding in defence and he stepped right into me. i made the tag and got penalised!!!!
Also, i thought the "hand-off" rule was still in place, but hand offs were below the chest, when did it change to none whatsover!??

| I understand why the rules were put in place, but they just do NOT work.
I have played this tag thing for about 7 years now, played lots of games in lots of tourneys from both Hull IMBRL to Keele University 7's and I have NEVER seen anyone seriously injured, in fact, the worst injuries I have come across having suffered some myself have been broken/dislocated fingers caused by trying to grab a small tag from someone running as fast as, so in some ways the new rules are counter productive. Contact should be minimal, of course if it gets out of hand it should be dealt with by the ref, and I do agree that their should be no fending to the chest and above, but the new rules effectively take the skill out of the game. If you cant run into someone, defensively you could just form a big line in the middle of the field and stop any progress to the forwards. This game we play was in no better place than when we were having regular tourneys at Hull and Sheffield with teams such as York, London, Shef Union, Shef, Cas, Wakey, Halifax, Hull, Hull KR, Shef pros, Fev, Leigh, Leeds playing in good spirit. The introduction of redtape and box ticking will only serve to drive away those who set the foundations upon which this whole thing was built and the players who set it up, which frankly is tantamount to criminal. Fax lost at least 3 experienced players yesterday, not including myself and my bro who will not play again unless something is done, one of which was a founder member of our club and a very experienced player, myself and my brother are both very experienced players, Jakey being one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the comp and myself being player of the tourney at the Hull IMBRL 7's in 2005, you are losing the backbone of the whole game!

| I feel, without wanting to be a bore, that we have had during my time losts of inexperienced players come thru, all who have enjoyed the experience. This includes several female players and young people. I myself play tag because tbph I am nearly 40 years old, have only partial use of my left shoulder due to a serious injury and am only 5'3" tall!! I just wanted to point that out as I am hardly looking for a physical freeforall am I!!
Ta Shaun, was just so frustrating to see what our great game has been reduced to at the moment, not without good intentions I am sure, but sense has to win thru.

Hello All
We have had about 6 or 7 games played so far with some going well and some not going as well.
Tom and I were looking for feedback for a training course and pack that we can give out that will help teams progress.
Yesterday Halifax played Hull, a lot came out of that game and will be delivered.
Points to note: Contact levels - its all about the avoiding of dangerous play and not penalising every form of contact. If a dangerous play happens this is up to the official to use common sense and speak to the teams. Contact will happen is unavoidable but as long as its not dangerous - play on!
Diving for a try - as long as the player is not in tagable distance or again not causing a potential danger.
Fending of the tags - we want to avoid the huge karate type chopping actions, a small tap away is usually deemed fine - again common sense of the official.
These are small notes from yesterday but a course will be held soon.

Any Complaints send to me in my in box and i will take everyone to Tom and go through it.
You have 2 weeks in which to get the e-mails to me
