| Why last night at 6.0 we should have taken the two points to go 8.0 and we didn't, then at 12.8 with 30 seconds to go we run the ball but we could have been 14.8 up, then in the 2nd half when we finally got into there half we should have ran the ball and gone for a try and put the game to bed but we went for goal and after that we never got in the Wakey 20 until a minute from the end. If we are 6 clear we should go for goal if we are four we should a tap and go for a try unless there is less than a minute of the clock anyone agree.

Agree with all those apart from the two points we did take. Always a fan of stretching a lead so I had no problem with us taking the lead to 14-8.
The one before half time really annoyed me because, as you say, there wasn't much time on the clock and and points would have been better than none.
Also, taking an early drop goal like Brough did is something we never do (apart from Graham Mackay v New Zealand in 2002 and Brough himself in the Cup Final)
So often kicked points can change the complexion of the game. For instance had we taken the two before half time then it would have been 16-14 and Brough wouldn't have taken the 1 pointer, Wakey wouldn't have got the ball back and the whole thing would have been different.
Briers kicked 4 drop goals in a game v Wigan in 2006 or 07 and Wire won by a mile. His continuous drops just kept Wire with the ball and they were able to maintain possession and grind Wigan into a pulp. Would love to see that sort of tactic employed by Hull.

Indeed. As soon as the equalising conversion went over I said to Mr B "This has a Danny Brough drop-goal written all over it". We'd never even a) think of dropping a goal, never mind before the last 5 minutes or b) have the plan to enable us to shape up for one and the ability to execute it.

| The main problem we have is that there is obviously a distinc lack of tactics used by the team this season.
Even when we won our first 5 games we won them in an arm wrestle type of manner playing the same style of rugby that we currently are. Teams know exactly what they need to do to beat us safe in the knowledge that we won't change a damm thing. It's like taking candy off a baby for the opposition.

| Concerning tactics i think for most of the first half yours were spot on. Numerous "assasin" (i.e. Running at him every tackle thus tiring him out) sets at Drew meant he's was knackered and unable to do alot in attack. Don't know what happened in the second half because if you'd have stuck with those tactics the result may have been different.

Nail on the head. Driving the ball with 4 mins to go and losing by 7 sums us up tbh!

Unfortunately you need a 7 with half of a brain cell to see and organise that, sadly something we don't have.
I would be tempted to drop Thorman completely and give Lee or even Houghton a go there as they certainly cannot be any worse than he is.

He doesnt choose to play 5 drives and a kick. He does what he is told to do by the coach, as Tommy Lee did last year at 7 when he was slated. Our 7s will always get slated as long as they are coached the play the way that they are, off the cuff stuff is strictly prohibited.

So Agars statement in the HDM 'We must find more leaders' and 'Agar called for a number of players to take more responsibility' is a complete contradiction of what he is telling them to do and what he is asking them to do.
A sure sign of passing the the buck if ever there was one.

But with 4 mins to go we weren't driving it we were passing it left and right but no one had the quality to make a gap or draw a man. It's only when we go behind and things are hopeless that we play with any attacking urgency.

More or less all the mistakes we made last night were when we were trying to spin the ball. We don't play 5 drives and a kick all the time it's just that we don't have the quality in the backs to get the ball wide.

The only time we try to spin the ball wide is when we are losing out of panic. If we were coached to do this well we wouldnt. Professional rugby league players can do the basics right such as passing and catching otherwise they wouldnt be where they are. They simply need to do it as an option not as a panic play.

Sorry Dave but I'll give you some examples of us spinning the ball:
1st half:
Craig Hall coming into line in shift to the left drops the ball knock on.
Danny Washbrook drops ball during shift to the right with useful looking overlap available knock on.
G Horne tries to ship ball on to Calderwood right edge knock on.
Calderwood scores on right edge.
2nd half:
Chris Thorman spinning ball wide right to G Horne pass behind/Horne goes too early knock on.
Kirk Yeaman throws out abysmal ball in general direction of his winger Broughton knock on.
Craig Hall fails to release/pass to winger on left flank.
None of these were panic plays they were just sh[ii[/ite execution by a back line which lacks the ability to perform the basics at a level suitable for super league. I don't think our tactics are by any means the best but this 5 drives and a kick lark is not the real story.
Incidentally Wakefield played an almost exclusive 5 scoots and a kick game last night and beat us thanks to having a top 33 year old with pace and the necessary skill levels to bring backs capable of backing up and catching into the game.

| This is why we need a leader on the pitch. I saw the Brough drop goal well before he did it but didn't have the nowse to get in a position to even try.
