Yeh that would have been best really although I think that the Foundation is paying some of the SMC 50% money on each ticket sold so they are probably limited in how many they give away. It think it will be around 2000.

As this promotion was part of the HDM "Bounce Back" campaign did no-one at the Mail think of asking the SMC to waive its right to a cut of the free tickets?

No I just assumed from comments made on another thread that some payment would have to be made to the SMC, but if the SMC had agreed to waive its right to any payment wouldn't it have been shouting about in the newspaper to get the good PR?
