We have just had the most dreadful weekend of our life's.
Here is a link telling what has happened to us.
www.thetelegr...attack_by_dogs/
The woman has been charged, but the dog which bit my child and ripped my dogs guts out is still with the owner. The police have no power to take it away.
I am desperate to do something about this. I have never begged any one for anything in my life. But i am begging any of you who think you may be able to help me in any way.
I want to do something about this. How do i go about getting a petition going/
How can i go about getting my PM do get involved in this?

| Very sorry to hear about this. I have just read the article and my heart goes out to you, and especially your daughter who had to see all this happen, we have 2 dogs and the thought of this happening to mine fills me with sadness and the thought that my children could witness this makes the thought even more dreadful. I hope the dogs that did this to your dog do get put to sleep, I understand some people might think that this is harsh but to me once a dog attacks anything else especially to this extent it should then be put to sleep the dogs are now dangerous and it should not matter about the breed it should be about the threat they now pose. If you manage to get a petition sorted bring it to the game on sunday, I am sure you will get some support.
I hope you and your daughter are ok and that this does not have an effect on your daughter with regards to dogs in future.

| You would hope that the local Bradford Councillor for the Knowle Park area would get in touch after reading that. Don't know the legalities - but the Councillor should get on to the right department in the Council to take action as well as the police. I think the local authority environmental health dept has some legal duties regarding dangerous dogs.

| Having a few week ago witnessed 2 dogs owned by one person attack each other and its owner I can confirm it is scary to see fortunately my dog did as told and kept away the fight lasted about 20 mins despite my efforts to stop it and the owner who was in my view lucky not to be seriously injured should not be allowed to have dogs at all.
In this case his dogs are quite aggressive mainly due to his lack of control.
I rang police and rspca at time of incident and what a waste of time that was. RSPCA visited owner and took no action at all.
These are not classed as dangerous breeds but any dog that behaves in this way must be destroyed because its likely to happen again.
So I urge folk to sign any petition that is started.

I can't get your link to work. Can you briefly say what happened? I have some questions. You say a woman has been charged - with what offence? What kind of dog is involved? Did the incident happen in a public place?

| It's OK I've found the story on the T&A website. The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 is what you need to read up on. I'm sure you will find it on t'interweb. Some dogs are deemed dangerous per se, such as the Japanese tosa, the dogo Argentino and dogs 'of the type known as pit bull terriers'. This expression is much wider than 'breed' so the Act still covers some cross-breeds. It is an offence to even possess such a dog. So it must be established exactly what kind of dog did the damage.
.
However, I think the most relevant offence is the dog being dangerously out of control in a public place. The offence becomes aggravated if the dog, while out of control, injures any person - as seems to have happened in this case. The owner of the dog, or the person who is for the time being in charge of the dog, commits the offence.
.
The Police do have certain powers of seizure but from what I'm reading it appears the dog has to be in a public place. The owner's home is clearly not a public place so the dog, if I'm reading this right, could not be seized from there after the event.
.
Courts' powersmay order the destruction of any dog where an offence of its being dangerously out of control in a public place has been committed and shall do so if the offence is aggravated (as in this case).
.
All this is from some brief reading up. I would urge you to read up on the Dangerous Dogs Act so that you can speak from a position of some knowledge when you are speaking to the officers who are dealing with this case.

| The link didn't work but rlTHISrl may be of interest and hopefully some assistance.
Try NOT to watch the x-rated video but note the attack in the house was NOT prosecuted - although there should be enough for the outside in the street situation - rlStoryrl
I hope the shock and the frustration subside over time for you and your loved ones, and those affected.
Only a Tory government could bring in the Dangerous Dogs Act while ending the requirement for a dog licence.

simpsons/simp048.gif I have only been wrong once and thats because I thought I was wrong but I was wrong I was right!
Petty authoritarians aren’t man enough to challenge the actions of a person face to face; instead they incite a forum of rumour, innuendo and half truths, and impose rude sanctions to discourage those who dare question fairness.

| Shocking, I hope your daughter recovers.
ALL dogs in a public place should be muzzled, NO exceptions. Very visible, easy to police. Strict penalties for offenders.
I regularly walk my daughters Rhodesian Ridgeback and German Shepherd and would welcome such a move. I wouldn't let either play with other dogs without a supervised introduction.
The ideal situation is that it should be compulsory for all dog owners to attend training and socialisation for their dogs, but imo that is impossible to police.
I came across this site on my travels rlhttps://dangerousdogsact.com/rl I don't know if that helps - it is not an official site. However, there seem to be a variety of snippets of useful info, links to the Acts and ammendments, plus advice on lawyers if you want to pursue a civil claim.

| Really sorry to hear about your dog and daughter being attacked, words fail me.
I until recently, often came across them in lund park while walking my ex-girlfriends dog, just like to let everyone know what a fantastic and well trained dog Ted was,I know from seeing your daughter walking Ted just just how fond she was of him,I hope she will be ok in the long term.
I have noticed over the past several month the increase in the park of large aggressive dogs(and some small)not under control. Not more than 2 month ago I found myself in a heated discussion with the owner of a pit bull that was was on the loose near the children play area,at one point I was forced to pick my dog up and fend the pit bull off,the owner insisted it had never bit anyone,it then descended into a heated argument at that time a community support officer showed up and asked the man to leave the area with his dog and keep it under control,he did but not before threatening me with his dog,the law with regards to dogs in public places really does need looking at.

| I work in this field.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss as regards your dog. What an awful way to lose a much loved family pet and Im sorry a youngster was injured.
The dangerous dogs act is flawed.
However just to quell everyones anger it does appear the that Police HAVE taken action, the owner has been charged.
The dog can be seized if it is suspected of being a pit bull and assessed by experts. Different forces have different policies on whether they the dog is left with the owner or taken into kennels - mainly down to cost.
I hope the court makes the appropriate orders at trial.
