Preparations for the big rugby league game in the capital on Friday the 22nd January are moving along nicely, with the annual London derby between London Skolars and Harlequins taking good shape.

The event has attracted an expanded and world class line up of sponsors. This includes headline sponsor ETF Securities, which is now the 8th largest exchange traded fund issuer in the world. It also includes a panel of Citibank, Irish Stock Exchange, Merrill Lynch, Rabobank and Selftrade. This event really is making a huge impact in the City, which will be covered by Bloomberg, City AM and Sky Sports. Hospitality for the event has been expanded by 50% and is all sold out. Robbie Paul will be the guest speaker and his inclusion has been greeted enthusiastically by fans and sponsors alike.

Skolars’ squad preparations are going well and Head Coach James Massara is keen to see his new team take the field: “We have some exciting new players coming into the club and I am looking forward to seeing them in action against high quality opposition. Players like back rower Ollie Purslow and Hooker Liam Prescott have been at the Quins for many years and so going up against their old club will be a big occasion for them”.

“Last season’s leading scorer Matt Thomas will be raring to go after gaining full international honours with European Nations Cup champions Wales. He’ll link up with new recruit Dave Arnott, who was part of the Scottish squad that reached the final. I am looking for them to step up and show what they have learnt from that experience. I am also keen to see what some of the young London lads can do. We have a good number of players who have come up through the Skolars Junior system and have been on the RFL pathways”.

The success of this event is also largely due to the new and improved relationship between the two London clubs, alongside teamwork with the Rugby Football League. Player pathways and development has seen the talent pool at engage Super League and Co-operative Championship levels continue to grow. The addition of the double header on June 12, where Quins play Leeds and Skolars play York at the Stoop, is also another fantastic development for Rugby League in London.

Tickets are stlll for sale but the capacity is limited so please hurry. Tickets are £15 and can be bought by calling 0208 888 8488 or email paulthorman@skolarsrl.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Are Harlequins even playing in this match or just Skolars? Seems like a very biased article, but then what do we expect of the Skolars mouthpiece who spams our forum at any given opportunity?

AFAIK, Skolars reps have always been welcome here. I've no direct interest in them, they're too far away, but I wish them well and admire their efforts.

ES comes up with a number of positives and Lister, as usual, comes up with a negative. Sad.

Too be fair......the skolars get more mileage out of this game than QRL. I wonder if EFT securities (and their very keen employee) would be so keen if it were Skolars v Hull KR?
Call me synical, but a certain person seems to have grasped the use of the Quins name better than the QRL team and who can blame him. On the other hand, when Quins looked into the Friday Night Lights thingy being switched to a double header LAST year.........the same person wanted to keep his event to themselves.....
All in all, I wish the Skolars well and applaud the proactivity they show......TW2 towers could learn something from them.
Listy.....try one of these chillpill.gif icon_wink.gif

to be fair your management at quins is as good as its ever been and they are all over all of this. Cooperation on players is great - both ways. The double header is moving the Skolars biggest game to the stoop. The city touch is a big joint success. the Cap Cha is a requirement of the RFL that says the local SL club plays the Championship side in a friendly and good on both clubs we have made it into a much higher profile event.

any forward thinking fans of both clubs would get behind this and showcase the game to the richest people and companies in London.

I'm with you on this one Elite Skolar...

This event in my eyes is a great initiative that puts not only the brands of Skolars and Quins RLbut the game of Rugby League in front of some very important businesses and contacts. One of RL's biggest problems in the UK is that it has yet to make any real cracks in the nations biggest city, be it fans or its corporations. Quins and London are a potential cash cow for the RFL and Super League.

I wish I was going to be this side of the world for this event, not only am I itching to see some Rugby League, I'd love have a snoop at this event and see how it unfolds. I will just have to wait until the season proper, and put up with some Ice Hockey as my sport fix for the next couple of weeks.

I'd just like to point out the entrance is on City Road, not Old Street or Bunhill Row. I made the mistake of approaching from the wrong side last time and had to walk a long way around to get in.

What's McD been smoking, it is a sports field after all...

Speaking about the rare chance to play rugby league in the heart of London, McDermott added:

“I reckon it’s the most bizarre place in the world to play a game of Rugby League. It’s along the same lines as bursting into the Houses of Parliament and playing cricket using the Speaker’s chair as stumps. ”
