| Leigh Miners 26 v 10 West Hull
Leigh Miners picked up there first win of 2011 with an hard working performance against West Hull in the First Round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup. Miners were always in front in the tie from when centre Tom Bradbury opened the scoring out wide on the left to give them a 4-0 lead but were made to work hard throughout the eighty minutes from a committed Wests outfit. Miners picked up there second try midway through the first half when right centre John Woods scored in the corner to put the home side 8-0 in front. West Hull responded with a good spell of pressure and a number of repeats sets but with Miners defending solidly it took until five minutes from half time for the visitors to get on the score sheet, Brett Turner’s pin point cross field kick found a Wests attacker to score, the kick converted to give the score 8-6. Miners hit back within a minute charging down West Hull’s kick, Ross Bradley giving chase along with the Wests full back, Bradley forcing him into an error to allow Scott O’Brien to pick up the loose ball yards from the line to score under the posts, Bradbury converting to give Miners a eight point advantage at half time with the score at 14-6.
Miners increased there lead after the break when Scott O’Brien stepped through the Wests defence to score his second of the game, Bradbury adding the extras to put them 20-6 in front. West Hull refused to lie down and were rewarded with there second try in the left corner to get them within ten points at 20-10, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Liam Coleman broke the line to send young hooker Joe Harrison in for his first try of the season, Bradbury converting his third goal of the game to give the home side a sixteen point cushion at 26-10. And that’s how it finished to put Miners in the draw for Round Two and pick up a much needed victory after losing there opening two matches of 2011.
Next week Miners play Hull Dockers at home in the League.
Leigh Miners 2nd team game away at Folly Lane was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
