Quote: sally cinnamon "In the Guardian it says that Dai Young (the ex Leeds/Salford player) who has come in as Director of Rugby at Wasps doesn't have Edwards in his plans.
I hope Edwards does get taken on by England RU but I don't think it will be in a 'supremo' role to replace Martin Johnson, it would be as some form of coach. However I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen. We might all slag off Nigel Wood and the RFL, and people say league needs to get its house in order compared to the way union runs itself, but the RFU isn't exactly a shining model of a sporting administration. It is like the FA, a bit of a boys social club more focused on making money and hobknobbing with their mates than being really driven for success. Edwards is a prickly character and I don't know if it will be easy for the RFU to strike a deal with him. A few years ago after the last world cup, Brian Ashton was a big fan of Edwards and wanted him on board, but the RFU told Edwards that a) he would have to quit Wasps and b) he would only be allowed to work with the Saxons (the second string). Edwards was insulted (as he made clear in interviews afterwards) and told them where to go. That's why he is with Wales and that's why Wales are better than England.
If Edwards does go to England though it could go either way. The England RU players are more celebrities these days than great rugby players, they have celebrity girlfriends and spend their time cultivating fans on Twitter and working on their image as bad boy party animals. Edwards will not have any time for that crap and will fall out with them. The worry is if the players go in a sulk and lose a few games the RFU will jettison Edwards quickly citing discord in the camp....'"
The fact that Edwards tends to speak his mind and call things as he sees them will be a big factor.
I can't imagine the RFU will want someone as honest as Edwards at the helm in the aftermath of their performance at the world cup.
It would definitely ruffle a few feathers!
