just an opinion,and would welcome everybody elses views,Do you prefer to go under the banner of Great Britain or England in international fixtures.team selection wise I know it wouldn't make alot of differance,has we all know where most of the quality players come from but I've always prefered G.B.especially with the olympics coming up team G.B is going to be a massive reconised brand in the future and could only benifit R.L if we joined(not jumped on) the bandwagon.

GB for me. Has more history in RL than England. Not being English I don't get behind the England team in as a big a way as I would GB. Would seem silly to some given a GB team would probably be 100% English but it the England "brand" isn't something I can identify with easily.

Ever noticed Great Britain teams are only associated with amateur sports? All the major professional team sports national side run under the England flag. Football, RU, Cricket. I personally would not count tennis or golf as team sports, and before you start with doubles/foursomes bear in mind there are no place of birth eligibility rules to compete in a doubles or foursomes pairing.

However, whilst I was disappointed the RFL decided to phase out the GB name, I did understand the reasons for it. One of them is the point I have made above. On top of that, the majority of the Great British public consider their national identity as either English, Scottish, (Northern) Irish or Welsh. [size(10 brownie points if anyone can spot the irony there.)[/sizeTherefore new fans in particular would feel more connected with the national side.

There are also financial implications. Would the RFL really have been awarded that £30million from Sport England if the national side had been named Great Britain? UK Sport don't really do an awful lot, and leave it to the four regional offices to delegate the funding to governing bodies.

SportEngland still funded them when they were GB. Splitting the national team into the home nations meant that the RFL could try to get an England 'brand' out to the public. Ever notice how England RL teams have been announced on the same day as the England Football squads recently? If you type 'England squad' that day into Google News, the England RL squad will return quite high up on the list of results. Also helps to generate an atmosphere at international matches; it's a lot easier to associate with the Ingerlund football chants, great escape et al than to try to cheer on GB.

I would say it also allows for the other home nations to play with more regularity without facing losing their best players for GB commitments (eg. Wales and Cunningham back in the day), but Ireland have lost Harrison and Danny Brough has defected to England and back to Scotland since the World Cup, so I'm unsure how slack the rules are regarding players dicking about between nations. Would be nice to see Lee Briers play against the big three international teams for Wales next year, although it is more than half a decade too late IMO.
