| Does anyone know if transfer fees count on the salary cap? I was just wondering as Wigan have paid significant sums for two of our players and Hull FC have also been spending big. Even HKR are rumoured to be paying a transfer fee for an un-named young SL player.
If transfer fees aren't part of the SC do you think they should be? The SC was supposed to even things up but money still talks when it comes to getting your man if you are an SL chairman.

| I don't believe they are no. I think only paying players off to leave counts.
I don't see it as a huge issue in the sense that they still have to cover wages on cap (officially) which is the important part and at least (in Taylor's case mainly) KR have been rewarded if you like for his development rather than him just moving on a year later for nothing. Surely that benefits Hull KR a lot more than if Wigan couldn't pay a fee for a player and waited until free etc.
Transfer fee's are deals between 2 clubs (normally) and the ability of a player in cap terms should still be dictated by there salary.

| But how easy will it be for HKR to find someone or develop someone as good or better? The player pool is small which is the reason for teams buying in the first place.

| No, transfer fees are irrelevant as they are essentially compensation agreements to settle the player's existing contract. Signing on fees paid to the player would count however, although I'm not sure if they even exist in RL.
If there is a way to cheat with this, Wigan will have found it though ![Wink icon_wink.gif](images/smilies//icon_wink.gif)

| It's all's fair in love and war i'm afraid..!!
Good to see Wigan have finally spent some of the transfer money obtained from the sale of Joel Tomkins.

| No transfer fees don't count on the cap, nor should they. Only money paid to the player should count on the cap.

| The Salary Cap in this country should just be scrapped. All it does is damage Rugby League.

Nonsense. Only one or two clubs in Super League could possibly spend more than the cap limit responsibly and none generate sufficient revenue to do it sustainably.

Nonsense.
Clubs aren't forced to spend a particular amount on players now and wouldn't be if there were no Salary Cap. BTW, the Salary Cap applies to the divisions below Super League as well!

So considering most clubs can't afford to spend anywhere close to the cap level why advocate scrapping it?

| Quote: Paul Thexton "So considering most clubs can't afford to spend anywhere close to the cap level why advocate scrapping it?'"
Directors of clubs should be the ones to decide how much their club can afford to spend on players (or anything else). Why do a few officials at Red Hall think they know better?
People complain, for example, that there aren't many, or any, clubs below Super League that are good enough to compete if promoted. What do they expect when Red Hall restricts them to spending next to nothing on players?
The Salary Cap regulations are taking away the incentive
- for young athletes to aspire to be RL players (as opposed to pursuing other sports),
- for financial backers to get involved with clubs below Super League (no automatic one-up, one-down promotion and relegation between the leagues doesn't help this one either) and
- for potential supporters of clubs below Super League as quality, ambition and opportunity could and should be better.
