The Daily Telegraph has today revealed why NRL legend, Andrew Johns turned his back on his part-time coaching gig with his former club, the Newcastle Knights.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the former Kangaroos and Blues skipper was refused a request to have his $15,000 per season payment figure increased to $30,000.
The ABC reported that Knight’s CEO, Steve Burraston said the Club cannot afford the famous half-back and therefore, could not keep Johns in his current coaching role next season.
“It’s a coaching decision. Our coaching staff would make a decision, whether they felt involving Andrew for the price he was asking was value or not,” Mr Burraston told the ABC.
“Whether you were privately owned or not, or publicly owned, or any other sort of model wouldn’t even come into it, it’s a coaching staff decision.”
Johns, who was employed by the Knights as a skill’s coach and mentor, played his entire NRL career with the Knights and will now focus on his 2011 specialist coaching roles with Super 15’s Melbourne Rebels, along with the Manly Sea Eagles, the Melbourne Storm and the Canberra Raiders.
