And thanks for the link, but I don't need to be a referee. I am a sports fan.

Almost everything you suggest as fixes has a cost implication for a sport that is not exactly flush. Some of them I plain don't agree with anyway.

If you want better refereeing, the best way is probably to have more referees. Which means making the job atttractive to them and making refereeing a grass roots game something to be done without being Jean Claude Van Damme or having a death wish.

I'm all for raising standards, but as the calls in your petition are not practical ore constructive. More technology is not the answer, and I think the over-use of video refs is spoiling parts of the game already.

Before calling for more video ref use, I propose the following trial:

In every match where the video ref is used, each referee indicates (write it in an old fashioned notebook for instance) the decision they would be making. Then see how often the video ref (and the 2 minutes of everyone's time) is actually improving decision-making. I say this not because I think I know the answer, but precisely because I don't.

* Forward passes to be looked at on the video screen - technology is advanced enough to be able to have moveable lines on a screen to check where a ball was passed and caught.

Noting the point where a ball was passed from to where it was collected would not often help unless we want to slow the pace of the game to say that of Union.

(Perhaps that's the next step following on from the melees that no longer contain any actual biff - hopefully after the World Cup is over we can have our grown men version of the game back.)

For the record I thought KR got thoroughly shafted at Wigan, but I also thought it came down to a lot of human error. I think all the tools to avoid a number of those errors are already there. It was just a poor performance by two officials. And the video ref solution certainly didn't help that night.

Is he still bothering with this after Fridays match? There was a video ref but Silverwood decided he knew best. Still if it stops Sandercock from moaning for a week it was worth it!
