Thought I would update this old thread.
Last year we visited the following when we came over for the Quins match:-
www.domainetreloar.com/ for a vineyard visit and tasting of the wines. Brit married to a NZ lass making very nice wines - not your bargain basement ones though. Well worth the journey but you would need a car.
www.trains-touristiques.sncf.com ... ne&lang=fr for the train Jeune (Yellow train). Quite an amazing trip up into the mountains - very (VERY) popular in high season. We went as far as Mont Louise picnicked until the return train. We had to queue for well over 1.5 hours at Villefranche for train tickets but the trip up and back was well worth it - amazing views and a pretty impressive project when built over 100 years ago. You can get the train there from Perpignan but we drove to the start.
Was planning to go to
www.byrrh.com/accueil.php to sample the traditional regional drink - perhaps this year. Its out in Thuir just west of Perpignan
Drove down into Spain via Collioure and Banyuls - nice drive along the coast. Had lunch right next to the beach in Llanca - amazing value at less than €10 for 3 courses. Made the mistake of coming back via la Jonquera (this was August) and it took hours to get through the town due to all the traffic. Well worth going to the town to see the amazing shops and restaurants at this border town - some of the restaurants at the huge truckstop type services are great value and have queues out of the door.
This year we have booked a visit and lunch at Domaine Cazes in Rivelsaltes
Plan to go on the tourist train from Rivesaltes to Axat
www.tpcf.fr/ most likely on the wine train that only goes as far as St Paul (its a bit expensive if there are 4 of you).
Read some good restaurant reviews for lunch at:-
La Pierranne 21 Carrer de la Marinada, 66740 Villelongue-dels-Monts
La Table de Cuisine 8a rue de taxo 66690 saint-andré
Beach in Argeles - if the weather is nice.
Perhaps rugby at Stad brutus (v Quins)
If anyone knows of any local XIII games on Sunday 31st July please post here or any other good value restaurant recommendations or things to do.
