| I'm about 90 pages in, as Rovers are about to move from Craven Street to Craven Park, and I have to say Roger Pugh has done a superb job.
He's really brought the early years of the club to life. The game and Bradshaw's goal to win the NU Yorkshire Cup, almost a hundred years ago, are described really well - you can just imagine it sailing over the bar from way out wide on cold, grey day in the final moments. Details, like the alternative names that were considered for Craven Park are fascinating to me.
It was interesting to read Neil Hudgell's perspective on the consequences of the move from CP, and that chapter sounds like it should be a good read - 'putting to bed some myths' apparently.
And some things never change - injuries have been ruining seasons and chairman have been questioning the commitment of players for more than a century!

I've got a book that gives every seasons results upto about 81 and in the beginning the scoring was a bit weird

Yeah, in the very early days you didn't get any points for a try - just a shot at goal. You could score three tries, but miss the conversions and lose to a team who only slotted over a drop goal. Goal kicking was much harder with the old fashioned balls, as well.
Kick and Rush was a common tactic for long time, and I think even in the 1920s the game would be barely recognisable as what we watch today.

30596_1286642206.jpg If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.

| Isn't that why it was called a "try" as getting a try entitled you to have a try at scoriing a goal?

Got mine for £14 on pre-order, which is why I have it already Mr Funtime.
I know you shouldn't judge a book by what it weighs, but it is a good chunky volume, and good value even at £18, if it's your sort of thing. IMO, etc.

Thought you might have been some sort of critic and been sent one to review ![Very Happy icon_biggrin.gif](images/smilies//icon_biggrin.gif)

| Really looking forward to buying this. ![Smile icon_smile.gif](images/smilies//icon_smile.gif) As well as the promising-sounding text it'll also be great seeing the pics of years gone by; if you went by Google you could almost believe the club didn't exist until 2007. :-/
Am also hoping there are pics of NCP pre-SL just for a bit of nostalgia. Changed in so many ways over the last decade, e.g. the speedway / greyhound tracks going, the CH Stand just been grass for so many years (and the little box on top of it IIRC - presumably that was used for commentary by someone?). Oh and the wooden hut near the East Stand to get your quid programme, lol. ![Smile icon_smile.gif](images/smilies//icon_smile.gif)
