Bit harsh, I agree it hasn't worked out and for a number of reasons and in the end he's gone to RU, but I think there was urine being extracted from all sides and we aren't exactly blameless.
In the long run I think this'll be for the best, I thought it was looking bleak when he was actually playing for us but still seemed to spend more time in the pub then Jimmy Bullard did when he was at City.
I got the feeling he destabilised us as a unit and if we can learn that big names very rarely live up to there billing then it may have been a lesson worth having.

If anybody had bothered about checking the news about him in Australia and the reputation he had earned then none of this would have been a surprise. It is exactly the same as what he had been doing there and is the reason he was no longer wanted in the NRL. But of course anyone who said that when he signed was a Hull FC fan jealous of the biggest Super League signing ever.





The problem for the dobbins has been that given what was known about Mason - he lived up to his billing 100%.

TBF if you get the rugby playing Mason he is a sensational player and maybe he is one of those that can go out on the lash and still perform on match day. I actually said I'd have liked to have seen him leather someone but just never seemed that up for it.
As for big name signings I still think Hull got stung this way with Berrigan, another one that seemed more interested in being on the lash than performing to the billing he came with.

About 5 years ago Mason suffered a fairly serious leg injury, since then he hasn't been anywhere near as good on the field. Before that he was a truly fearsome player, huge and quick, and so good that his always poor off field behaviour could be tolerated. After that the off field damage he causes hasn't been able to be excused by credits earned on the pitch. The tearaway Willie Mason is gone forever and has been for a long while now.

I played a bit of union in my youth and the difference between the codes certainly takes a bit of picking up, to think Willie can just go into a team with no training or ever having played a game of RU seems very strange. At his time at KR he didn;t seem quick or fit enough to play in the backs, unless they play him on the wing and make sure the ball goes no where near him. First ruck / maul and he wont have a clue whether he can pick the ball up or not or when to let the ball go when tackled.

That is ludicrous. They can't have included him for any other reason than publicity, ticket sales must be slow.

Been thinking about this. If we assume that Mason's first contact with Toulon was the week before he was de-registered, Rovers whole argument against him would depend on how informal this meeting was. If it was a friendly visit, a tour round the stadium and a visit to the Naval museum followed by a glass of pastis at one of the bars lining the waterfront then I doubt Rovers have much of a case. It certainly went very quiet after that and looked as if Toulon had moved on.

By the time proper negotiations were entered into and money and signatures were exchanged, Rovers had de-registered him and he was a free agent, able to speak with whom he pleased. So Rovers would have no case against him. Mason, on the other hand, may well have a case against them for breach of contract. De-registration would have severely compromised the terms and conditions offered by Rovers within his contract, not least the fact that he was restricted from playing.
