why would other soilders who join for a career want to work with some people who dont want to be there?
it was hard enough when one person who was due a detachment went sick because somebody else who isn't expecting it has to cover them. ive know blokes miss there childs first birthday, aniversary and even have to cancel holidays.
people who dont want to be there would go sick or awol all the time.
and thats before we take in the places were they have to be professional and well trained because their and the people they work with lifes depend on it.

I was thinking more the lines of Front Line cannon fodder to be honest... then send in the real troops after theyve gone in.
And i know ahell of a lot of people in the forces that would welcome it, and i know this because ive only been out for 2 years.

I personally feel the dath penalty is barbaric in this day and age and realistically it woud not prevent the most heinous crimes from being committed. It may stop the odd money motivated crime, shooting during armed robbery etc but in all likelihood the perpetrators of such crimes will never think of the consequences prior to committing them.
The real issue with the criminal justice system in this country is the inabilty to deal with and the inconsistency that 'petty' / less serious crimes are dealt with. The antisocial behavior and lack of respect for the police of a large element of our society seems to have is the real problem with todays society. For all the death penaly worthy crimes are abhorent they are also very isolated and in reality are not the crimes that affect us most.

This fella know's his onions.
I think that's a very interesting point you make about the likely hood of jury's failing to convict, impossible to prove but I do think there's something in it.
Having the death penalty doesn't appear to have done a real lot to put murderers in Texas and other US states off.
As to DNA, there's a real danger in viewing it as an all knowing panancea for justice. Yes, it is a very valuable tool, 100% reliable, not at all.

Problem with that is you tar all with the same brush, and as has been said it devalues great work the armed forces do and the people in them.
The way to deal with it is to punish people properly, not let them get away with the first 10 offences, scrap Asbo's as they don;t work, stop suspending sentences and make prisons a hard labour place to be. 5 years minimum for carrying a knife, 10 years for a gun. Police the benefit system properly and make parents control their kids froma young age.

| As a new father, if any pervert touched my son they wouldn't get the chance to hang them, I'd do it myself. Paedophiles don't deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of us and yes they should be hung.

| as much as paedophiles and rapist turn my stomach i don’t think i could agree to the death sentence, if you kill someone for killing someone it makes you a hypocrite really.
the problem with the death sentence is that it is just about revenge really, but as the other post says i guess i would feel a lot different if i happened to me or mine.

| So who gets to decide who lives and who dies?
Who is so perfect in their judgement and behaviour that they can make such a decision? Politicians maybe?
As we all know, no such person exists.
You may think Gary Glitter and people like him should lose their lives. But maybe the person who gets to decide doesn't like you much either.
Stalin executed 20 million people and thought he was completely right to do so. Back then he was the one who got to decide.
No man has the right to take the life of another even when it is done in the name of the state. IMO.

Hopefully not the same people who deem a rapist or psychopathic murderer well enough to return to our streets only to commit the same offence again......and dont say this is rarely happens, as once is to many for the victim.

Should we be expected to be perfect in our judgement and behaviour in order to determine that a child murderer should die?

Why should a child killer like say Ian Huntley have a right to life, just because some do gooder thinks it makes us as bad as them. We all know we are not killers but probably would kill if need be to protect our children.

I'd also widen it out to a series of other offences

With 54% of people in Britain supporting the return of capital punishment this drama was set in a ficticios paralell Britain where the death sentence was re-introduced for murder and rape of children under 12 years old.
Thoughts ?'"

| An eye for an eye is one way of looking at it however we would have to be careful as even DNA evidence is not 100% accurate.
As said it has done little to prevent crimes in other countries and there should be much cheaper ways to imprison someone for life.
We need tougher jails for criminals that dont require rehabilitating such as peado's, they should be punnished and made to cry themselves to sleep on a night, however the death penalty...its a tough call and one I'm still unsure on.
Maybe a Judge and Jury could decide if someone is guilty and then the punnishment could be offered to the victims or families of the victims, if they decide death by whatever choice there may be then that is what is carried out?

| Did not watch this programme for one reason. It is ment to provoke silly reactions from people who do not understand the justice system in the uk. Probaly daily mail or sun readers. Does capital punishment work? How many wrong convictions would end in death? Too many! Silly silly programme
