That was what the initial reports said in late 2011, but:

We can't just pay players off because they get a couple of injuries. The 'persistent inability to perform his job' I guess would be covered by an insurance - but you're looking there at a 'permanent total disablement' that would prevent him from participating ever again.

As that's a direct quote from O'Hara it does seem fairly conclusive.

| It often surprises me at how differently people see players performances. I rate O'Hara pretty highly, he knows when to settle a game and when to step it up. A lot of fans want the game played at break neck speed for 80mins but the fact of the matter is, not even the best teams in the world can sustain that for a run of games even if they're good enough to do it for the odd one.
Our team is young, our captains are young, our oldest player is stuck out on the wing and is often joked about off the pitch for being so quiet. That isn't something that happens with O'Hara, he's vocal and has a wealth of experience at the highest level.
If we can get him fit and keep him fit (very big ask) then I see no reason why he wouldn't compliment our squad. Some of these kids need players like O'Hara around to guide them, even if they, themselves are not playing.
I will agree though, an extra year is a year too far for my money and would have liked to see his spot taken by an approximately 28-30yr old prop who has also been at the very top and has experience to share.

Last year Bradford established the precedent, endorsed by the RFL that persistent unavailability to train or play is grounds to terminate a players contract.
It doesn't have to be permanent disablement or anything like that. Whatever the players problem he can't keep earning big bucks indefinitely for doing nothing. As I recall, 7 months inability to train or play allows a club to sever ties. And NO compensation. O'Hara is at the 5 month stage and of course he has previous from last season. No doubt before then he'll recover well enough to resume his brilliant Rovers career.

| Regardless of O'Hara's injury troubles, the club has an excellent reputation of looking after it's players and I think that's way more important than saving a few quid.
O'Hara is an honest guy and whilst he obviously won't be awarded his 3rd year option next year, if he can't play again this year (which appears to be still up in the air), he should be given some kind of coaching duties to help develop our other young forwards on the fringes i.e. Green, Beaumont, Cox etc. get in the team.

The option might well be in his favour. Possibly with conditions attached though.
His Bobness - which player did Bradford terminate the contract of?
