No, I don't think it's "pretty bad". He will have decided together with his partner.

Shaul can't win, if he had stayed home and then she still hadn't given birth by now, people would also be on his back!

No, you won't be the only one. He's a professional sportsman, there are sacrifices that have to be made. With a bit more 'planning' he could have been at home for the birth.
