| Today, on the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, it is appropriate to remember Jack Harrison Victoria Cross, Military Cross, who gave his life in the service of his country.
RIP Jack Harrison and the millions of others who did not return.

My uncle was in the same regiment as Jack Harrison and also died in France being awarded a posthumous Military Medal. Born in East Hull my Grandad told me his son was a Hull FC fan. His medal and other personal items currently reside here in Aus.

| We the people of Hull should never forget what Harrison did. Sadly the national papers do, articles about sportsmen lost in the war often fail to mention him - despite his medal tally being amongst the most impressive.

| What a fantastic opportunity for Hull FC to commemorate this great man for the next 4 seasons by having your man of the match award in his name or something similar.

| What few people know is that Jack's son, also John and known as Jackie, was killed during the relief of Dunkirk on 1 June 1940.
Two world wars had managed to rob Lillian Harrison of her husband, son and brother.
There is also a memorial to Jack in the Guildhall that was taken from his old school

| I think Hull had the most 1914 1918 street shrines in the country at one point , Well over 200 but sadly now only a handful remain .

| Disgrace he doesn't even get a mention on the BBC website rlHERErl
How many pro sportsmen won VC's? Does anyone know? Wasn't there an Aussier RL player who also won one?
Is the RFL doing anything to commemorate those players who died in the conflict?

Especially surprising given that one of the contributors to the radio programme was Tony Collins.
Records of RL (or Northern Union) players who served in WW1 seem particularly sp indeed, as can be evidenced from Tony Collins's blog
On the subject of an Aussie RL player also winning the VC, I'll check back through my Jack Harrison Memorial Committee minutes. I seem to remember a NZ RU player also won VC and MC but a lot's gone on over the intervening years and memory ain't what it once was.
There is a podcast from Blunderside rlHERErl
