Just got back from the weekend in London and the cup final, so not had chance to see any comments til today. However, I was amazed why FC didn`t take the guranteed points on offer when we were awarded 3 or four kickable penaties in the first half. We would at least have gone in 6-6 at the break, and possibily 8-6. Instead they opted to run the ball and knocked on everytime. Just a thought, but I would imagine a game of that calibre and in those terrible conditions, the penatly kicks would have been safer, guranteed points and made sure we were not nilled !

I said as soon as Wigan kicked out on the full to take the 2. 1 minute into the cup final, in a game that will be affected by the weather, it would have been a boost to get on the board

Agree with you - most people would say in a cup tie you accumulate the points when you get the chance. Goes with the general lack of awareness I reckon.
No shortage of brawn, but little use of brain.

Remember an away game at Leigh and bieng 22-0 down at H/time came out in second half and got a pen straight awayToppo said take the two we went on to draw 22-22 ! Thats what makes agood captain ,Ellis was off the pitch when we got most of our pens , you never know what might have happend ... ?

I remember one occasion in the second half when we got a penalty in a very kickable position. A trainer/water carrier quickly ran on and we opted to run it. I wasn't particularly surprised or horrified by the decision as we have usually ran them in that position this season. Was it the wrong decision? Possibly. Would it have made any difference? Probably not.

I remember Danny Tickle kicking 6 penalties against Crusaders in similar conditions.Proves that you dont have to constantly keep running the ball from pens

I agree. We knew the conditions before the game and usually wet conditions mean low scoring matches.

Therefore, taking the points was essential. I can understand not going for the penalty in the first minute, but the chance before half time was a no brainer. 6-2 down at half time after that performance would have felt like a Get of Jail card. It would also have meant that we would have stayed close enough to Wigan during the second half to keep taking the two and maintained a level of pressure. Then it may have just required a single try to win the game.

Instead, Wigan were always in a comfortable position in the second half and as the clocked ticked all they needed to do was play sensible rugby, not force the play and push us back with a kick that bounced into space (as opposed to straight down Tomkins neck).

All men are created equal, some work harder in preseason. -[i:1c45x4hd]Emmitt Smith[/i:1c45x4hd]:

that was a shiite game that one, the highlight being Nobby having a fit on the sideline at the TJ and Child after they gave the pen for a late charge on Lyne

Same type of game and result would have suited us on Saturday though

In hindsight it seems like a good idea but when trailing in a match it would be a very brave decision to kick a pen. If they had and gone on to lose the game they would have been slaughtered on here even more than they are for not doing it. They had been without the ball for long periods and under the kosh in their own half. They needed to have some pressure of their own, tapping the pen gave them the opportunity unfortunately it was wasted.
Who's to say they kicked the pen, Wigan kicked off and they dropped the ball then?

Yorks cup final. Boothferry Park, Oct 1984. rovers lead 12-0 after 30 minutes. Hulls first points that day were from Lee Crookes boot icon_wink.gif

There was a thread on the VT years ago which was discussing what you would choose to do if you were 8 points down with 3 minutes to go and you got a penalty 20 yards out in front of the sticks. Go for the guaranteed 2 with the ball coming back to you from the kick off giving you a chance to level it up?

When Pitts kicked through with 2 minutes of the first half left and was obstructed, that was a guaranteed 2 points. We were having to score twice at that point anyway. At 6-2 you are down to scoring just once to take the lead. With 25 mins to go we had a penalty well within kicking range which would have made the score 8-4. Another one about 5 mins later could have made it 8-6.
