You know if somebody did something really dumb (theoretically) like loose their jacket with their car keys in it, what is the best method of getting them replaced?

Its a Peugeot car, 09 plate. Electronically coded key. I still have a spare coded key.

Somebody suggested to me that it likely to cost somewhere around £150 to replace - is that right?

I looked at getting an elec coded key (for a 2010 Skoda) replaced after I lost the original, got a pretty similar quote (£130 a couple of years back), the key cutting is the cheap bit, the electronics, and programming to match the car will cost about 140 of that. (Think Skoda wanted an hours labour @ main dealer prices).

I went back and looked a little more thoroughly after that.

We were quoted similar for a replacement Saab key after, I assume, the battery leaked inside it and it stopped working. Took it to our local Saab man and he got it sorted for about £30.

I guess you could try finding a one man band who knows Peugeots instead of going to a dealer to see if they can help

Cheapest I've been quoted for my Corsa key is £90, seems a lot compared to some of the stuff they can do on your car for far less!

There's a guy on Wednesday market who cuts car keys and he can do electronic ones ,a lot cheaper than main dealers

Does he just cut them? If so, I think any key cutter can do that. The cost seems to be in the electronics and coding.

Most car insurance policies have key protection, depending on your policy you can claim without it effecting your no claims (similar to windscreen cover).

It varies from policy to policy but it might be worth checking yours before spending £100+ for something your already paying for.

It's certainly an added extra on the budget policies but if you pay for a better policy it's usually included, in my experience anyway.

With regards to claims, I have claimed for windscreen chip damage without no claims protection and it didn't effect my no claims. Again I think it depends on who you go with and how much you pay.

windscreen chips are usually "free", even with budget policies, key insurance is always an added extra. The big problem with insurance is it's one of those things that you buy hoping to never use.
