Just read that Adrian Purtell's heart attack could of been brought on by dehydration. Is it time to split to game into quarters when playing in hot weather like at the weekend or dare I say split it into quarters full time. I'm sure people would be up in arms but I can see quite a few positives to this idea.

No need to change it, I wish him well, but it's more a question of why wasn't he hydrating properly during the game (if indeed it wasn anything to do with dehydration, I can't see any medical evidence that it does, many studies say the impact can be as severe, but I can find no evidence of a causal (or even casual)link between the two).

I'd be against officially splitting matches into four quarters.

The RFL and the match officials just need to apply common sense, if the weather is particularly hot then call a brief drinks break at an appropriate point in each half.

If I read the reports correctly, Purtell had a pre-existing condition that made him vulnerable. If it was a general problem with playing in hot weather we'd see many more of these incidents and not only in RL.

There is already a rule in place that if the game gets to a certain temperature, they take a short on-field drinks break at the quarter points. Happens a lot in the French games. I believe this happened between Toulouse and Widnes in 2005's CC quarter final on BBC.

I'm not being funny but you are aware he played in Australia for numerous years were the weather is vastly different to here. Dehydration was probably a bigger factor over there then it is here.

Just one of the rare occurrences similar to Muamba were there is probably an underlining problem that is waiting to rear its ugly head and a random time unfortunately or fortunately (depending on how you want to look at it) it happened on the team bus.

What concerned me most was what Brian Carney was saying on Boots N All about cardiac checks NOT been compulsory at clubs. In today's professional environment, and after two recent deaths in rugby league, I find that absolutely shocking.

Remembering of course that it's currently autumn approaching winter in Australia so albeit a better climate than the UK unlikely to be exceptionally hot, i.e currently 17c in Sydney

Completely agree, the technology is there and it can save lives, biannual checks should be compulsory and players not allowed on the field without them.

I predict the game will be split into 4 quarters eventually, not for health reasons but purely financial, extra advertising revenue for Sky, bound to happen.

It was that far forward it wouldn't even been allowed in the NFL as it was passed forward after line of scrummage. I bet they would of seen it with the review system and all their officials they have.
