| Couldn't find the original thread, sorry.
Just moved back to Hull. What broadband options are there now that Karoo no longer has a monopoly? It was always crap from what I remember. Has it improved? Are there any fibre optic non-phoneline using options (house phones are for the stone age!)? Just want a good offer!
Many thanks.

| Karoo are in the process of going fibre optic, starting with the slowest areas first. Expect a price hike when it's done.

They don't?
As far as I am aware they still have an effective monopoly and the only real choice is still Karoo.

| TBF, most (not all) people's speed problems with Karoo, have little to do with Karoo themselves, but distance from exchange, local wiring etc and moving ISP wouldn't make a lot of difference... but try explaining that to somebody that is convienced that "Karoo are a bag of s**t" - and in someways it is a shame they can't move to another ISP easily to show them that there is no difference.
Personally, I have found Karoo to be fine. I get 10mb download speeds on a standard ADSL line.

they do reserve the right to slow your useage rate if you are a heavy user (esp at peak time) and are percieved to be going over the fair useage amount - or something like that, i'm not too techy on internet stuff. that might explain the peaks and dips in the speeds

| I know this wouldn't suit everyone but I got that fed up with being shafted by KC and paying what effectively amounted to £30 a month for broadband (when you take the landline into account as we didn't use if for calls) that I bought a 3G Wireless router and 3 PAYG data SIM & Dongle from ebay and it works perfectly for me.
If your not streaming TV (although I have used it for this with mixed results) or downloading copious amounts of music/films then I find it spot on, even works for XBox live without lagging for the most part so I really cannot complain. Cost me about £60-£70 to get setup but I've been using it for about 6 months now so it's more than paid for itself and I can only see it getting faster.

Quote: hullbg "The only other options are Nextgenus , Sure broadband or Airnet.
I think Airnet have been a bit of a flop.
Nextgenus have just started a new package £50 set up and £17.50 per month.
10meg up load and download, 30gb per month and a free 01482 number
Surebroadband seem fairly reliable to date, not sure about what there prices are.
Some good info:

Airnet have been a let down. Dont think any of them offer any kind of unlimited service either without the usual restrictive FUP. Karoo have their bad points but given the alternatives it still seems a better option.
