His commitment to the team has never been in doubt, his whole hearted displays are always evident, his lack of ego is pleasing to say the least, for these reasons and more he should be signed up ASAP.

I'm not here to play games with you. It's widely documented that Whiting loves it at Hull and therefore he would take the longest deal that was on offer.

I reckon he'll go on to be a great coach when he hangs up his boots

or alternatively he didnt at the time know whether he'd get much game time so wanted the opportunity to both prove himself but then look elsewhere if the opportunities didnt come?

Or he didn't want to commit himself to a longer deal with less favourable conditons (due to doubts about fitness/injuries) so took a 1 year deal to prove his fitness and therefore value to the team/squad and get a better deal quicker.

It would be fairly easy to include terms covering this into a longer deal.

He is clearly in a stronger position now to negotiate a new deal then when he agreed the 1 year extension. How would the club quantify what he has to do in order for those increased terms to kick in?

Well, if it was down to injuries/fitness as you suggested, number of appearances?

The number of apperances could be down to injuries to other members of the squad though. His level of performances would also have an effect on his value. He believed in his ability to make an impact with regular game time and took the gamble of a shorter deal for a longer term gain.

His number of appearances would have been down to his own fitness first and foremost, as well as his ability to cement a regular first team slot. If there were no other injuries and he wasn't good enough to hold his place, then he wouldn't be deserving of improved terms.

Say Hall and Yeamo both picked up long term injuries which meant Whiting had to play the required number of games in his clause regardless of how he performed possibly due to how the serious injuries had effected him. Does he still get the increased terms?

To begin with, you suggested it was about injury/fitness, and not ability. Secondly, he was playing well enough before his new contract to suggest that ability would not be an issue.

It is possible for a players stock to increase and therefore his market value and wage demands can increase. The club had doubts about his ability/fitness/injuries and therefore valued him slightly less than he believes he is worth. He took a 1 year deal to prove he is over any injury problems (value increases) and to show his importance to the team (value increases). Its therefore not unreasonable to suggest that Whiting prefered to take a 1 year deal in order to secure a much improved deal after 1 year rather than settle for an inferior deal for 2 years.

And therefore clauses can be put into a player's contract to cover this eventuality.



You're right. Makes you wonder why everyone doesn't demand a one year contract! It seems much more likely that a one year deal is all that was offered because of the previous injury problems.

To be honest, I can't be bothered to argue about it any more. This is probably one of the least exciting discussions I've ever had.

Surely your not suggesting Whitings situation is the standard set of circumstances players find themselves in when looking to negotiate a new contract?
