If you can't get that knowledge across via your coaching methods, it's pointless. Long's coaching method of lasting two minutes in a role and buggering off won't have many listening just yet!

As a fellow Rovers supporter, we need to be careful when discussing the re-hiring of former embarrassments!

Sport is littered with 'greats' that have instantly thought they just need to walk into coaching and they'll be good at it, unfortunately the ones who fail outweigh the ones who succeed. This is even more apparent in modern day sport than it was in the 70's / 80's.

Long's whole demeanor projects unprofessional ism and he seems to back this up at every turn.

I wouldn't be opposed to Long coming in and taking some sessions with the halfbacks at the club. As long as its more along the lines of a consultancy role and not contracted to work day in day out with the team.

I believe you're referring to Rivers 're hiring Cockayne (which I personally find abhorrent). He however was sacked by Rovers due to his thuggish and I'll educated behaviour. He though clearly cares for Rovers.
Long according to his own biography went to hull because they offered him most money.
He then starts selling supplements to the squad. They fail drug tests. Long 's response. To vigorously blame hull. They lose their chief executive and a member of their medical staff and have their name dragged through mud. He sees out his contract in the physio room and walks away bad mouthing the club.
Some buffoons are advocating re employing this great advocate for their club.
From the 2 clubs point of view the 2 situations don't hold up in comparison.

I don't usually comment on things to do with Rovers but this just comes across as pathetic points scoring in my eyes. I know that you're saying its abhorrent that Rovers re-signed Cockayne but you're also saying that it's understandable because he loves the club. No, it really isn't. They sacked him and by signing him again they are pretty much sending out a message condoning his prior behaviour in my eyes. Hardly their finest hour however you paint it.

If (and it's only an if at the moment) FC do sign Long up as a coach I don't think it will be their finest hour either. But to try and make Rovers look better with a comparison is just ridiculous.

My opinion on Cockayne is well documented on the Rovers forum.
I never wanted him back. He however did less harm to his club than what Long did to yours.

You seem to be forgetting that the harm done to the club was by our incompetent conditioner clearing the supplement in the first place and by our idiot CE then orchestrating a cover-up. Long's role was actually pretty minor - he may have been the initial contact for the supply of the supplement but had it not been cleared as OK nothing untoward would have followed. Hence the lack of a sanction against him.

You do realise all players take supplements? These particular supplements had been cleared by our ex-conditioner so Long will have been under the impression that he was doing nothing wrong. You make it sound like he knew what he was doing and screwed over one of his best mates! Yeah, alright!
