My guess would be the former.

I'd hope and expect that we'd still have enough for at least one more top draw player and maybe a couple of descent squad players with the calibre of players we have lost and due to lose. I realise we have upgraded contracts but still think we should have plenty of spare cash.

The only other explanation is he’s had a better offer elsewhere and he’s decided it’s a better move. There’s no way having a chat with his team mates will have changed his mind, he will have no doubt gone through the pros and cons before deciding to sign. The one option I would have thought closed to him now is staying with us.
