Quote: barham red "In hindsight it seems like a good idea but when trailing in a match it would be a very brave decision to kick a pen. If they had and gone on to lose the game they would have been slaughtered on here even more than they are for not doing it. They had been without the ball for long periods and under the kosh in their own half. They needed to have some pressure of their own, tapping the pen gave them the opportunity unfortunately it was wasted.
Who's to say they kicked the pen, Wigan kicked off and they dropped the ball then?'"
Yorks cup final. Boothferry Park, Oct 1984. rovers lead 12-0 after 30 minutes. Hulls first points that day were from Lee Crookes boot
There was a thread on the VT years ago which was discussing what you would choose to do if you were 8 points down with 3 minutes to go and you got a penalty 20 yards out in front of the sticks. Go for the guaranteed 2 with the ball coming back to you from the kick off giving you a chance to level it up?
When Pitts kicked through with 2 minutes of the first half left and was obstructed, that was a guaranteed 2 points. We were having to score twice at that point anyway. At 6-2 you are down to scoring just once to take the lead. With 25 mins to go we had a penalty well within kicking range which would have made the score 8-4. Another one about 5 mins later could have made it 8-6.
