I know there is a thread on this somewhere but I've gone back a fair few pages and can't see it so if someone wants to consolidate this with that thread feel free.

I was reading Wilf's piece about promotion/relgation etc. which got me thinking. If I recall the main reason for the current system was to give a degree of certainty to the clubs and also to prevent the yo-yo scenario.

Wilf commented on parachute payments to help with the certainty position, I know it doesn't stop the fear of relegation but it should stop clubs going bust as a result of relegation.

As far as promtion goes I would propose a system whereby the team that finishes top of the second tier is promoted but the promotion is defered by a year. The team would be provided with additional funds from the RFL to build a squad whilst competing in the second tier.
If as is likely to happen the "prefered team" finishes top of the second tier in year 2 then the runner up will receive the deferred promotion.

A long way from ideal and would need funding somehow but at least it gives the newly promoted club the opprtunity to build a squad capable of competing in Superleague without becoming the competition whipping boys and whilst there is a degree of complication at least everyone knows what they are doing before the season starts.

richard lewis did a lot for our sport. he was a big loss. i look at the large numbers of young players being blooded in superleague now and the relative lack of overpaid oversea players and wonder how strong our international team(s) could be in 4 or 5 years. a return to promotion and relegation might threaten this development as clubs go for the safe but expensive option of imports and dodgy claims to british ancestry to save them from the drop. how the english football game could use a set up like we have in superleague at the moment

and who knows? we might even unearth a couple of young halfbacks

Top 6 play offs.
Bottom 2 in SL at the end of the season play each other in relegation playoff. Loser down.
Simple really.

If you're going to have a relegation playoff, it should also include the potential promotion candidates too. What's the point in dropping one team for another team that could prove to be worse?

P&R should not be given any serious consideration is Superleague. The licensing system MUST be given time to work, 4.5 years is nowhere near long enough. We should give the current system another ten years and if in that time we're not seeing any real, tangible benefits, then we should look for an alternative
