I'd say that much of the off field success is as a direct result of on field success in the period 2003-2007. This resulted in increased attendances, increased sponsorship and increased merchandise sales. Problem is that poor on field performance quickly puts these into revers and the whole infrastructure of the club changes dramatically.
There are other areas such as the foundation which are very successful but the success of the club as a whole is reliant on success (or relative success) on the pitch. History is littered with examples of large sporting clubs who have quickly gone down the pan due to poor results
