Just thinking back to Mondays Meeting, and the one thing that stuck out for me was the average age of the attendees.

With just a few exceptions the Majority i would say was probably 40+, certainly 30+ anyway, so, where were all the young ones? Is it that they don't have the "length of service" to feel the way we do, or was it they really can't be d one way or another about the club. Or have i got it completely wrong?

Just wondered...

I'm 23. So I suppose I would be classed as a young un. I finished work at 6ish, then I was playing Touch n Pass at Belle Vue. I think I missed half of it and wanted to get home at a reasonable time to grab some food and get a shower! If the meeting was a bit later and I knew their was a collection I would have stuck around. Im guessing the 16-21 age group might have finished college/uni at 4.30/5.00pm and some probably have to travel. If some live out of town they may even struggle for bus/train fares if they have no weekend earnings.

That's just an idea but tbh I have no idea! Maybe the 'diehard lot' of our support are among the older years?

Anyways, I renewed my season ticket and bought some merchandise and I am doing my bit! I know that my pals similar to my age are doing the same =).

I think it's simpler than that, with practically every meeting I've been involved with/attended there have always been the same old faces, I just think the younger speccis both have other things to do or think that someone else will do it, I'd guess I was the same when younger, there always seems something else more important to do! icon_rolleyes.gif
Or is it that it's easier to chat/get involved online rather than in the real world? I really don't know.
This is no pop at Jasper by the way. icon_wink.gif

I think it's only when you've been supporting a long time that you have an interest in the off field stuff. When your young I think the mentality is its not my problem. When you get older you can begin to see how it's possible to effect a change.

It's no different to any other 'interest'.

I attended the AGM for the Unity Hall Co-op Trust last night. I can't think of anything that would better improve the lot of the teens / young men and women than to have a decent, viable music venue bringing in some good names to the City - yet the audience were, if anything, even older than that of Monday night.

I think it's akin to politics - most of us have some interest / take on politics later in life, but very few of us are William Hague!

Oh, that and winning the odd silverware would help! icon_wink.gif

I was there and im 23. Iv been watching wakey since pre 98 first game i remember is Hull kr at home in the play offs. Anyway i think of all the people my age iv watched wakey with over the years and they just stopped watching for one reason or another. Moved away to uni or got jobs elsewhere or just fell out of love with rugby league and only have a passing interest in the game. Ive stuck it out, mainly because of the passion my dad has for this club. Wakefield trinity is en grained in me. And I wouldnt have it any other way. Theres nothing quite like supporting wakefield.

Although we've got plenty of younger fans, meetings like the one on Monday evening and important as it was, are not much "fun" for younger folk. and its a problem for most committee meetings.
Maybe there should be a junior aspect to the supporters trust that, will bot engage specifically with our younger fans and air their views.

This is in no way a criticism of the S/T but may be something to think about.

Whether, our 15-25 age range want to be involved in this sort of thing is a different question.

I don't think the young ones are any less passionate or interested, it's just a responsibility thing.....and a money thing.
When you are younger you have so many other things that seem important, like beer and girls and exams and girls and beer.
In addition, younger people tend to look to the older people to lead on things like this.
And after all that, it is implied that the club need money and would ask at that day. When you are younger and less confident with yourself, you don't like to think of yourself being embarrassed when you can't do that.

Of course that wasn't the intention of the meeting but that's how it can be perceived for the younger generation.
On top of that, the details were distributed pretty quickly so no one missed anything.

When you are looking for vocal support at the ground, or people to turn up and support Newmarket decisions at the Town Hall, you find tonnes of young people and families.

So I don't see it as a lack of support from the youth, just different support and different capabilities.

In the early days the trust brought on board a young chap for exactly the points made

He posts on here from time to time but sadly the trust never really took off.
Any young fan wishing to become involved would be very welcome I'm sure.

Younger people have other things to do. We see plenty at the games but meetings aren't of interest to them. Let's be honest, a vast majority of people aren't interested in the politics of a club they just want to see a game.

I understand your point, But without getting involved with the politics there may well in the future be no games to watch! icon_rolleyes.gif

I previously posted a suggestion to open Belle Vue so we could actually see how many are willing to show support by attending. Sunday afternoon would be ideal at what would be kick off time and this would be the perfect opportunity for MC to sell the vision
I just feel this would be a way to send out a message of our intent to the RL world and the media that we are prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder and actually get of our backsides.

I may be alone in thinking this but it's so easy to use the Internet and what we want is some physical presence

Any others feel the same?

I kind of get it; if someone had told me when I was 20 that I would be a school governor, helping to run a jr rugby club and attending meetings like this at BV, I'd have laughed in their face; young people, as a rule, just don't get involved in stuff like this - maybe they feel they have better (more selfish) things to do or maybe they feel powerless to help.

I'm sure there are ways to engage them, but not in the traditional, 'let's have a meeting' kind of way.
