I agree with what your saying, completely. Although you have to analyse the game durng half time, I think Jon Wells makes it really simple and the exact opposite of a science lesson.

Consider that you've got Stevo saynig the same cliche things at completely random times. Classics such as "they need to utilize the dummy runners" or talking about "the second phase".......even he doesn't know what he means by this. As well as the usual, when a penalty is conceded "the coach will be absolutely furious!"

.....Jon Wells has the analyst job and tells it as it is - This try came from this (few circles of a player etc etc) this is what they spotted, this is what they executed, this is how it works.

He puts it all into 2 minutes and I think that's the best we've got!

The video ref thing is just awful - it's just cause Ganson wants to be on the telly and can't bare to be out of the spotlight. Culminating in the drab voice of Smithy saying "and the decision is..... it's a try.... there was nowt wrong... the ball was grounded.

Can you imagine a football match where someone scores, and the 4th official comes on in a booming drab voice saying "and the referee has awarded a goal."

I hate this the most, circle any number of players at any number of points in the game and you can spot something it is lowest common denominator stuff dressed up as analytical insight.
Its all an over complicated way of making our game and its players look cleverer than they are (look at Robbie Hunter Paul) and cleverer than they need to be. RL is a game for big hearts not Nobel Prize winners.

The thing is its not just the 15 minute interval is it, its the hour before kick off too.
I don't mind a small amout of pre match info or recapping each half's highlights at half and full time, its the lab coat overkill that does my box in!

I think it's all cringeworthy, the build up, half time and full time round up, I switch on at 7.55pm and switch off as the final hooter goes.

I don't love it... I don't even like it! But Jon Wells is given guidelines of what to say etc... I think of the lot of them he does the best with what he has.

I personally enjoy the more analytical match analysis. I also like Jon Wells.

I hate the Video Ref stuff and my pet hate this year is the use of the word "pouched" when referring to a player catching a kick. It has also now crept onto the radio coverage too.

Well, although this is a bit off topic, it's the only thing I can comment on in this thread.
I like Wells. I didn't think he was a bad player either until we got him but I like his analysis. He is fast and accurate in his summary. He and Carney make a good team.
I'd happily lose the video ref thing but they should stay.
