| Just looked at a map from when the ground was built but there was still a field where St Catherine Street now is. Belle Vue is in large letters over the area, and so it is not specific to Trin.
And in 1854, there was a "Belle Vue House" where the Sugar Lane cemetery is now.

I always thought it covered the area, hence also Belle Isle in the vicinity. Probably was a lovely view a couple of hundred years ago too.

| Quote: Did you know?. "Just been given some strange foreign beer called Belle Vue and it got me thinking, where did the name of our famous old ground come from?. When you think about it we are not the only ones, Doncaster Rovers football teams ex ground was called Belle Vue and off the top off my head theres a Belle Vue speedway team. Any ideas?.'"
There's also a belle vue area in Manchester an area that have a belle vue speed way team, and not that you know actually had a championship winning RL team in the early 1900s the Belle vue Rangers. Who later folded and formed the Broughton Rangers who played out of the cliff in salford now used by Manchester United as a training base.

Here's a link to Wakey gov site, which talks about the Wakefield longstanding links with France, with the Fluer di Lys etc. Maybe the name Belle vue is somehow linked with that french connection? An ancient estate???

And thinking about it, Portobella doesn't sound that Anglo Saxon, because on the map there is a Portobella House.

| I think Portobello comes from a house of roughy the same name Porto Bello. This was owned (I think) by a Portugese man Juan Fernandez who was a wine importer a couple of centuries ago. In Portugese it means Good Harbour/Port etc. I found this looking through old records in the County Archive possibly 20 odd years ago. The area of the grounds of the house cover the area now known as Portobello, including the park. I believe the area is still known for alcohol-related activities!
On another note Flanshaw estate was bulit on the lands of Flanshaw Hall (I think again) so all these places seems to have links with the landed gentry.

You would seem to be right, as this is the area in 1848, although was the Hall named after the Hill, or vise versa?
It looks like Dewsbury Road goes up where "The Grove" is and cuts right through Flanshaw Hall, to join up up with the road that used to run past the pit.

'"
..... and near the centre of the map is Humble Jumble and the bridge half way up Alverthorpe Road is still known as Humble Jumble Bridge. There's an amazing amount of old Wakefield left - the Woolpack at the top of Westgate was there in the time of the wool market.
To try and bring things back a bit I don't know too much about Newmarket but the name must have come from somewhere - or maybe we can start a whole new name for the area. Suggestions???? Could name a road Winning Way, Watene Walk .......

| newmarket already has many named areas, theres a "nimby nook" where you can see nothing from within the nook but yourself and your own opinions, theres also a "boothys crannie" an ancient area renound by many to have mystical powers, which lead to you ending up on highly amusing random photos.
new areas include "phils hill" where the vision is indisputed, "walker vale " which reveals things if viewed at the right point in the calendar to achieve a brighter future, and "Big Al's crevice" which has no scenic value whatsoever.
there is also the remains of a pit shaft which im asking you all to sponsor mwilcats to investigate and to ensure his safety ive employed chilean miners inc.
there was a better mwildcats shaft joke but id get banned.
