Quote: Uptoncat "You think I don't know the game? I've played the game for twenty odd years and watched it for just as long. We were poor mate very poor no direction at all, gleeson is not a super league centre and it's a good job he was replaced after twenty to twenty five minutes otherwise it would have been a real land slide. I'm a realist and tonight was a poor showing, ok we dug in a bit in the second half but wire took their foot off the gas. Sol was a class above when on the pitch and admittedly he can do it against any team it's no coincidence they scores their two second half tries whilst he was on the pitch'"

I was at the game and you are spot on.

Gleeson is going backwards and is not a SL Centre. When Johnson is fit I'd play him in the centre. JD gives his all but I'm afraid it looks like age has caught up with him.

Poor performance, need a big improvement or Cas will turn us over.

Absolutely - they will run riot through our pathetic attempt to play the sliding defence.

We could all see that the sliding defence was not working, that is of course those on the field and those who decide waht system we are playing to.

We have been caught out by it against Huddersfield and Hull KR were wooping us untill we went back to man for man marking.

Stick with man for man marking we cannot do sliding defence.

Agree with what people are saying. I have been tonight and am so frustrated at how easy teams cut us to shreds down our right hand side. Sean Gleeson needs a rest, he just doesnt seem to know where he should be in the defensive line and was leaving Blanch 2 on 1 on every single attack down their side. Blanchy didnt have his best game in the world but its not easy doing 2 players work. This isn't the first time Gleeson has been left wanting and unfortunately for young Morton, he took the wrath from certain pundits and the media when in reality he was suffering the same 2 on 1 scenario himself in weeks gone by ! All coaches will look at the VT in the run upto our game when we play them and it was obvious from the 1st minute tonight Warrington were targetting out right channel. I have confidence in the King that this will be rectified for Friday.

We didnt play well tonight but if we take some positives away with us -

1. Matty is getting back to best. Fitness returning week after week and solid at the back again.
2. Sammy is just non-stop and never gives up. Rewarded with another superb solo try.
3. Cooke more influential tonight and will only get better.
4. Gledhill had another solid performance up front.
5. Kirmond played well when introduced and will no doubt improve our squad.
6. Hendo fantastic again. Tackles anything that moves and made 2 clean breaks.

We can play a hell of a lot better than that tonight and with a little bit of luck we could have gone in at 16-10 ( would like to see their try on the hooter ). We had them pinned on their own line from the kick off in the second half and who knows what might have happened if we had managed to get level. Like I said to my mate who was with me at the game tonight, not many teams will goto the HJ Stadium and come away with anything so all in all its not the end of the world.

BRING ON CAS !

Quote: The Clan "Its a big week for the teams in the top 8!

We need to counter the Wires left side attack with some strong defence and a good kick chase on our right side to limit Atkins & Kings ability to make good yardage.

With that in mind I'd play Aaron Murphy in our right centre with Blanch outside him bolstering the defence.

IIRC, Cooke prefers to defend on the right as well so we could look pretty solid out there if we choose.'"

Quote: Uptoncat "Not the ref who wasn't the best but our display tonight. Very flat with ball in hand mainly 5 drives and a kick. Once again gleeson has shown he is the worst defensive centre in the league and blanch on the wing wasn't much better. We've got a natural centre playing out on the wing surely noes the time to drop gleeson give murphy his chance in his favourite position and bring back moreton or George. JD is looking very tired this season and I hate saying it but I'm not sure he's up to the task against the top teams in the league. Hopefully tonight is a blip but it's no coincidence that the two tes we've played with a bit of form behind them have beaten us convincingly. The score flattered us tonight and we need to improve ten fold for the derby game on good Friday'"

This is pretty much how I saw it, and we weren't helped by the ref. Having said that the scoreline did flatter us I'm afraid to say and I never felt we were in this one.

JK needs to drop Gleeson as teams are now, opposition teams are now targeting us down that side with considerable success. JD looks like a shadow of his former self and although I can't knock Obst's effort he lacks the kicking game to unlock defences.

On the positive side after losing Brough it will take time to adapt, Cookie is starting to show glimpses of what he can do and Gledhill was once again solid. Kirmond looked useful when he came on in second half.

I think switching Murphy to centre is a sound idea as his defensive game is top notch and am inclined to agree re: george/morton for blanch. I would start with Kirmond and have JD on the bench.

I doubt JK will make many changes as he likes to let players redeem themselves, but surely he needs to address Gleeson's defensive frailties.

and the award for most pathetic post of the week goes to....

UC agree with your post. Gleeson, and imo Blanch, were poor tonight. TRB you say stop the sliding defence it doesn't work and i agree, but only in that some players have suddenly lost the ability to implement it.

In the first half our kicking was as bad as i have seen in a long long time and barely improved in the 2nd half. As much as he tried Obst was very ineffectual tonight. Cooke looked rusty and needs time, Henderson was the only one making any kind of yardage.

Was worried at how Davey was dropped from the bench to make way for Kirmond, not that I dont think he should be involved but that we looked unbalanced.

Worried, but hopefully we can stuff our rivals on friday....

Think jk has persevered long enough with gleeson - his defense has been shocking this season, time for a change.

Have to say that although we were poor defensively it was our lack of tactical kicking and ball control aligned to a lack of go forward that really caused the problem, obst was awful with his kicking first attempt a poor kick straight into to touch - a series of aimless mid field kicks and then near the line both obst and cooke trying to thread the eye of the needle.

Thought wolves set out to stop our front row playing and just beat us up,

The consensus around me was man to man. We do not have much success with the sliding defence - if you get it wrong (as we do) it looks horrible.

TBF to Warrington - their handling and momentum were good enough to expose us in those areas - as were Hudds and as were Wigan at BV last year (Ainscough x 4).
