I agree. They form a good half back partnership & their styles of play complement each other.

I think Smith gives him time he needs in the ball.
The ball comes accurate and fast which allows him to run or put the pass in.
His pass is a slow one which balances well with Smith but on it's own it just looks to slow play down.

Strong in defence too.

Just hope he can keep his form, dont think hes ever let the team down. It will be interesting if his form dips, he will soon become an old git who should be shipped out.

I agree. He's no speed merchant (never was) but has other qualities required of a SO and a good enough goalkicker.
He seems to keep himself fit so why not give him another year.

Agreed, coming up for 300 career appearances with 95 tries as well. Good experience to have around the place.

Said before if you have the match dvd take a look back at them and he has saved a fair amount of certain trys with his positional sense being in the right place at the right time when hes played stand off.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread about Paul Sykes after reading some of the comments about him on the Sammut discussion which I think are harsh and also seem to contradict a general good feeling about him only 4 weeks ago.

We need strength in depth which he would provide if signed up for another year although the rumour is that he hasn't been offered another 1 year deal?

Sykes can cover 1,3,4 and 6 and we've been short in decent backs this year. I understand Hall may be seen as the younger replacement.

Lamps Boys comments are quite apt.

Sadly his best years are behind him and it is probably time to use the salary cap on others. We can only carry so many experienced players and I bet all of you would prefer we use some of the savings trying to retain Smith which this move suggests is a possibility

Think Sykes would make a good L/F.

Is Sykes going to be replaced by Hall?

[iHowever, the retiring prop Andy Raleigh, Matty Wildie (Dewsbury Rams), Lucas Walshaw (Bradford Bulls) and Paul Sykes, who has yet to decide where he will play in 2015, are all named and hope to make farewell appearances.

Sounds like we've put an offer into Sykes possibly but he's not yet decided to stay or not? At just turned 33 in August he'd be a good utility back player next season if not our first choice full back. He's also a great goal kicker. Hope he has a good game and stays on a 1 year deal as we need more depth in our back line.

No it reads like we have released him and he hasn't yet chosen his next club from the offers he does has. Whilst I agree that he'd be a handy squad man we can't afford it and he's leaving i'm afraid.

Rather than WTW have released him I thought his WTW contract had just expired after tomorrow meaning that he was open to offers from all including WTW?

Anyway if not Sykes then others will have to come into the club as we are short on backs.
