| Quote: j.c "These houses disappeared from local council ownership.
The only people laughing now are the children of those people who bought there property at an absolutley, ridiculously low price, they are sitting on a small fortune when in reality that money should belong to the local tax payer.
Councils are now spending billions on rent to private landlords and on new build social housing.'"
Absolutely right.
To paint Thatcher as a visionary social entrepeneur because she engineered the sell off of council housing is either naivety or the worst kind of spin; as it happens, it did create a property owning generation, and look where that got us?

And therefore this is part of the reason why the LDF has been set. One of its aims is to set out where housing of which a vast amount will be social housing can be built. So this in theory should go some way to solving the problem.
Had the council houses not been sold off then the children of the people who bought the houses would generally still require social housing so the demand would be even greater than it is today.

I dont see it like that.
The vast majority of people who bought there council properties would have been working people or retired people IE they would have had spare cash.If these people wanted a morgage why didn't they get one years earlier ?.
imo to buy the size of property that council properties generally are, would have been well out of there reach financially.
