The problem with Liverpool's defence was this time last year they were settled.

We had Aurelio Agger/Skrtel Carra Arbeloa. This year we've had to incorporate 3 or 4 new defenders into the squad. Never good is it?

Saves per shots on target would be more relavent.

There are many different factors to consider. But when year after year one keeper conceeds less than another, it is fair to say the one conceeding less is the better keeper.



2 weeks ago every keeper in Britain did perform better than Kirkland. 90% of keepers in the British leagues would admit that even after that performance, Kirkland is a better keeper than them.



No, he was poor. But even after that poor performance, he's still done considerably better than Reina or Given this season.

Reina isn't better than VDS or Cech, too many calamity moments. Johnson, Torres and Gerrard would walk into Uniteds team.

Evra

Lampard
Fabregas
Fletcher

Robinho
Drogba
Rooney

So the keeper who has a better defence infront of him or a weaker opposition attacking him is a better keeper than one that has a sh[ii[/it defence and facing a quality opposition?

O'Shea, Neville, Rafael, Brown, de Laet, Fletcher, Carrick, Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Fabio, Giggs.

Each one of those has played in our back 5 this season, yet we've still got the second best defence in the Premier League to date, conceeding only three more than Chelsea, despite all of our problems.

Brad Friedel is probably the best 'keeper IMO. VDS flaps far too much when crosses come in, Cech hasn't looked anywhere near as good as he was in his first couple of seasons, and he too flaps too much when a ball comes into the area.

Not long, but that's the problem.

We haven't had chance to get a settled back four. An unsettled back four, with players playing out of position, especially putting CM at CB should in reality make us more exposed, and give the chance for us to conceed more goals.

I don't think we've played the same back 5 in two/three consecutive games all season.

Friedel and Given are the best keepers in the Prem IMO.

So 4 players who have played together for 3 or 4 years dont have a better understanding of each other's game than players who have just arrived at the club a la Johnson, That greek bloke, Insua etc etc.

Friedel has been the best keeper around for quite some time. I just wish Liverpool would've kept him on or he signed for another big club.

The names i mentioned have been in the team for quite some time now. Go back 3 years i'd say and they're all there in the team apart from Carrick. Even Evans was in the squad back then.

prior to that he wasn't near it as Pique was the back up defender or Silvestre, Brown, O'Shea.

God know's how these players cope with international call-ups.

I thought you mentioned the new lads because you were talking about an unsettled back 4, that's the reason I mentioned all of them that'd played at the back this season for us.

On loan for 6months was it? Still was in the squad before that.

I took the newer ones out. They will have unsettled the back four but haven't all played together in one match. There has been atleast 2 of the settled squad members in the back 4. Hasn't there?

Settled squad members, yeah. Settled defenders, no. That was my main point, it doesn't matter how long they've been at United, they'll have never trained as a defender or as a defensive partnership.

Friedel was underated for years because he played for a 'small' club but now he's moved to Villa everybody is realising what Rovers fans knew for years that he is one of the best keepers the premiership has seen.
