| 3 try assists and a match winning try tonight. Looking better defensively than he did during his previous Wigan tenure (particularly under the high ball). As good a comeback as we could have expected 5 games in?

| He's also taking the pressure of others which improves the team.

| I didn't expect him to settle in as quickly as he has done after such a long lay-off. It's a different Sam Tomkins we're seeing to the one in his previous spell, but just as effective.

| He's totally different but equally as effective. He was quiet but quietly efficient for large parts tonight. He was as solid as a rock under the high ball and very good defensively. In attack he's clearly lost a good bit of pace but his eye for a gap is there still, his passing selection is superb and he's physically bigger and is finishing trys he may have struggled to force in the past.
The very best players can lose certain attributes but they're good enough to reinvent themselves and adopt different styles. He's falls exactly in to that category.

| I'm delighted with his come back so far. For someone who has had such a long time out he has settled back in very quickly. I've said a few times we will see a very different player to the one who made his name making eye catching breaks. He is now a far more accomplished player, one who allows the halves to play with less pressure and more freedom and one who's defence has improved significantly.

| I think he changed his game before he left to be honest. He'll still come up with a bag full of tries when his support play clicks in and we get some forwards who can actually make breaks but he's always contributed plenty of assists and control and organising since probably 2011.

He lost a good bit of pace in 2013 and had already stated to play a different role for us. He used to get accused of being greedy but that certainly won't get thrown at him now. He links the play and brings others in. In a full strength Wigan team with a full pack of forwards he'll really start to fire us up.
I really hope Bateman stays on and FPN comes in. Those two along with Lockers, Faz and Clubb will make us a totally different proposition. If we could add in Micky Mac our team starts to look pretty intimidating.

However, a number of electrons were mildly inconvenienced.

Wigan rugby league, hated, adored but never ignored

| Yeah, I agree, Sam's settled in much better than expected. I was anticipating around 6 months before he got back to his best but so far he's impressed me. I think Shaun Wane has timed Sam's return perfectly, so glad he wasn't rushed.
Sam knows his pace needs to improve, I'm loving watching him back in the cherry & white where he belongs.
Such a shame we still have so much class on the sidelines, I'm also hoping the Bateman issue will be resolved and that he can retain his place in the squad.

Here hoping.
As a side we'll be around the top end of the league IMO for as long as we can keep a 1/6/13 of Tomkins, Williams and one of Bateman or Lockers. They give you three top class options to build a side around and make life much easier.
Take Lockers and Bateman out though and you're suddenly plugging gaps in that loose forward role and it has a knock on effect for the rest of the pack as we shift players about.

I've said it before, and I know it's probably too late in his career for such a drastic positional change. But I'd be interested to see us sign Tommy Leuluai, play Tommy and Sam Powell at hooker interchanging for each other. And shift McIlorum to 13. He has decent ball playing ability and is aggressive in defence like Sean O'Loughlin, and isn't and less aggressive or small than Bateman so hopefully would be able to gain decent metres. Then keep Bateman out on the edges where he is truly dangerous.
It's actually an idea I got from watching Widnes who often bring on Heremaia at 9 and then keep Lloyd White on and play him at 13. It's a similar principle but just make Micky start at 13, especially if we sign Leuluai who I always believed was a better 9 than 6/7

Sam looks so composed since his come back,he may have lost some pace but his decision making is fantastic
All Sam needs going forward is a good off season in training as he has missed plenty in the last year
