Was at the game earlier and after watching himI found myself frustrated that he doesn't really seem to be progressing or improving. I understand that we can't just judge him off that one game but I've thought this most of last season. He came onto the scene and impressed with his debut but since then hasn't really cracked on. I understand that he did score a try when he play against Hull last year but he seems to be frustratingly inconsistent. Ive followed a few workington games aswell this year and he's struggld to impress in those aswell. With Bowen staying for this season and Hampshire (no matter how many times you say it, Wane wont play him at 6) seemingly ahead of him in the fullback sucession line, does Tierney have a long term future with us?
Tierney has obviously impressed for Workington, he's impressed at times for the U19's but there are still a lot of issues with his game. Fielding kicks has been a problem for him at first team and academy level, whether it's high bombs or ones along the ground he's prone to a few mistakes. His attacking game is quite good but he doesn't seem direct enough at times. He'll go sideways hoping to go round a player but simply get closed down. He could do with regular games at Super League level to show he can cope with the increased pressure and to improve his game.
I think Gabe Fell is the better fullback of the two. He perhaps doesn't have the same amount of pace that Tierney does but he seems a little more direct and has an excellent sidestep with good acceleration. He also seems more solid defensively.
Tierney spent a lot of this game running across the defensive line. I am not criticising him. From where I stood, behind the posts, every bit of pitch was filled with big Australians.
