| There's a topic on the VT about English hookers. Fans of other clubs clearly don't rate (don't like) him.
I stated that I wouldn't swap him for any other English hooker. People on there are saying the likes of Lunt, Hodgson and Houghton are better than McIlorum.
Roby and Clarke are in the top three with McIlorum imo.
For me Roby isn't the threat he once was and I don't fear him like I once did, although he is still a top quality player.
Clarke has the x-factor and does the eye catching stuff but I haven't seen enough of him to judge his all round game.
Would any Wigan fan swap Micky Mac for any other English hooker? If yes, who would you swap him for and why?

| He's a decent club hooker. I do feel he's a bit overrated by our fans though. There are a few hookers in SL who I think are a bit better than him but the only one who would be worth the disruption of swapping him for would be Roby.

| Not a chance! Not even for Roby. Roby at 23 perhaps but not now. McIlorum is great hooker and for me he's way ahead of Lunt & Hodgson. I've not see enough of Clark but he's young and seems to have a bright future ahead of him but still, he's no MM though!

| As an outsider, Roby is on a different level to McIlorum. He is comfortably the best hooker in SL.
I can tell why Wigan fans like him, he busts a gut, hits hard and. Gets stuck in.
For me he doesn't have the X factor, makes too many poor decisions and too often his 'getting stuck in' is a dumb decision and results in a dumb penalty
Mcilorum is as good if not better than the rest of the top hookers in SL (bar Roby) like Lunt etc. Clarke however has the potential to be something very special.

| Roby is the best inSL when on form.
What little I've seen of him this isn't a form season. Saints just flog the guy, they borrowed Howarth last year when Roby was injured then sent him back. Still no no.2 for Roby at Saints.
Lunt is good but in consistent.
Clark is good and would be brilliant in a top team. Rumoured to Wire and I don't think they are a top team anymore, not this season at least. They will have to sign more than Clark to get to the top again.
McIlorum is excellent for the type of game Wigan play. The front row go with total power and aggression for 80 mins when they have a full compliment. MicMac is vital to that. No other 9 could provide what Micky does to Wigan and their style of play.

A fair assessment. Mostly McIlorum has shaken off the dumb decisionmaking in attack, and he does lack the spark of say Clark. But as a guy who will physically dominate in defence with a high workrate, he has no competition in SL - whether that is what you want from a hooker is down to tactics (our systems don't need too much individual spark from hooker, just to be enough of a threat to compress the opposition defensive line). He's also got that quality of rising for big games which has been invaluable, and imo he hasn't disgraced himself when playing for England and is still a decent option as a starting hooker there.
Downsides, are obviously that the aggression in defence can go too far.

| I wouldn't swop him for any other hooker in Super League. On the other hand he will never be a Terry Newton.

With regrards to defensive workrate, what about Houghton? He makes way more tackles

| Hull fans seem to be falling out of love with Houghton a bit recently. Always looks a bit of a Mal Alker to me.

| You only have to look at the WCC to see how good Mcilorum is. In a game when the team looked completely out of their depth Mcilorum and Lockers were ones that showed they belonged on that stage and were good enough to compete with the best in the world.

| Quote: Grimmy "With regrards to defensive workrate, what about Houghton? He makes way more tackles'"
I meant the combination of keeping up the dominance. McIlorum isn't a stats machine like him or Roby, the the tackles he does make hurt the opposition more. I meant that he does have a high workrate (not the highest), but that out of the players with the strong work ethic, he is by far and away the most dominant. Sorry for the ambiguity!
It's no good being Nathan Friend and making an absurd amount of tackles if the opposition can get on a roll by running at you all day, and at times the stats machines can start to become a liability because of this imo. McIlorum is not overused in defense for me and I'm thankful for that - he's less likely to be burnt out and can continue to be a threat in defence. I prefer it that way, but in terms of raw work rate he's bested by Roby, Houghton, Hodgson and probably some others.
