| It appears that the dual reg / loan rules have changed and Gelling is playing for Workington Town today, along with Tierney, Murphy and Farrell.

| Gelling had a pretty good game, as did Lewis Tierney who played at stand off and didn't look out of place there at all.

| Workington is a pretty low standard, so if Gelling doesnt shine there, his time is up.

Gelling has a good game and people still feel the need to comment negatively. Hows about we give him a chance, playing week in week out will only benefit him and he might just do enough to get a few games for us and surprise us

| I'd give him a shot Easter Monday. I'd want Gouldings experience on Friday but him and Sarginson have not nailed down that spot yet and it's only fair to let Gelling have his crack.
I've held out that hope Gelling could turn in to something special since I first saw him and I still believe he could. He's a big, athletic lad and causes problems to any defence but he needs to smooth off some rough edges. He's in a similar mould to Jordan Turner at Saints who is improving his game (apart from Friday when he was awful).

no. the point i am making is that Gelling really is in last chance saloon. he HAS to make an impression at Town, or its over. and even if he does do OK, the step up from the third tier to the SL is huge.
I have no wish to see him fail, but he has had over 2 years to make a spot in the 1st team his own and has failed.
Burgess, Williams, Hamshire - they made the best of their opportunities and rightly ahead of him in the pecking order.
Gelling is fantastic in the air, has excellent willingness, but he has no game sense whatsoever.
the fact that no one knows where to play him is worrying for someone of his age.
Also doesnt he count on the overseas quota ? so to have a space taken up by someone of his calibre is poor.

But every time he has come in for a game he will have had no game time previous as he has had to kick his heels not being allowed to play elsewhere and being too old for the 19s, how many players can come in cold and hit the ground running?
Playing week in week out will benefit him massively and when he is called on by us he will be in much better shape to prove his worth IMO

I agree with you that its difficult. However, those are the rules that we have to play by. The problem with Gelling over the last 2 seasons is that he has never done enough to justify getting the shirt week on week.
He had a decent run on the wing, but Burgess showed VERY quickly that he was a better option on the wing.
He had a shoot out for the centre berth with Thornly last year, and Thornley out played him and had outstanding games in the CCF and the play-offs
Bateman had a chance in the back row and did enough to keep getting picked.
It is not as though Gelling has been treated differently to anyone else eg Tierney, Murphy, Dudson
Unfortunately, we dont have the luxury of playing giys week in/week out unless they show sufficient ability to deserve the opportunity.
If Gelling does get a chance this weekend, then I hope he takes it with both hands. However, he has had enough chances, so he has to do enough when he does get one to justify getting another go.
There are youngsters behind him that are pushing him now eg Bateman, Burke, Connor in the back row, Manfredi on the wing

| I dont think he is a winger personally, but his most impressive performance recently was when the kids played the second half against NZ Warriors. He played right centre and he was outstanding. I would like to see him get a go against Bradford there as Goulding has been struggling so far this season

Judging by the tone of your response i guess that you were too
I can recall an instance last season that we wanted to dual reg Kylie Leuluai with Hunslet and he wasn't allowed to due to red tape regarding his visa
Gary Hetherington called it red tape bureaucracy at the time and that it was an issue that needed changing urgently

I really don't believe that Gelling has had a fair crack at the whip at Wigan.
We have lamented about how players play poorly when not played in the correct position and have allowed them this excuse yet with Gelling it does not seem to be the case.
Gelling is quite clearly a centre (right centre)/back rower and I think it's as plain as day to see. I'm not a coach never have been and never will be but to me this is obvious. Playing him on the wing in 2012 was square pegs in round holes in my opinion but he made a decent job of it for a centre/backrower. I did see the merits in at the time as Gelling could be classed as a project signing so to give him some game time giving him the wing spot was sensible.
Goulding is currently out of form and has struggled with injury so far this year. We all know what Darrell can do and this is why I think he should play on Good Friday but I do think after that we should look at playing Gelling there for a run of games or certainly for the Bradford game on Easter Monday. I was shocked that Gelling didn't figure in the cup match Vs Dewsbury to be honest.
Thornley did play well in the Challenge Cup Final and he was reasonably good in the play-offs but I do think Thornley's performances on the whole have been distinctly average if not sub-par yet Waney has stuck with him. This makes me surprised that Gelling hasn't had more chances unless he has been suffering with some unpublicised injuries.

| The system has never helped his development. He needed a run a season or two ago to cement him in a position but we could not accomodate it. I am always impressed by his handling and ability to take on the line. For his own sake he needs enough of a run out to allow for a decision to be made on his future. I really think that we need a big wide running second row to offer us something diffrent out wide.

Pretty smug post that ShortArse. Gelling played really well today up against the Championship Champions - QLT, Misi Taulapapa, Menzies Yere, Pat Walker, Dominic Brambani and the USA World Cup player who's name I can't spell.
So why put him and Town and the Championship down with your cheap remark.
He played centre today and had 2 and 3 men on him each time he got the ball but our winger outside him had more runs today than he and other wingers have had all season. If Wigan don't know where to play him we'll have him to play centre every week.

We were similarly unhappy last season as Gelling like Leuluai was unable to go out on DR or loan and so could play in our first team or nowhere. I can only imagine that some behind the scenes discussion has been going on since to get this rule change made. Although Wigan and Leeds were the only ones I can remember publicly stating they were unhappy with it I am sure other clubs and players will have been affected too.
The rule change was mentioned by Kris Radlinski in this week's programme but there had been no mention of it being discussed or being possible previously so that is probably why it surprised most people. Radlinski said that it had changed in the past week. IIRC Shaun Wane also mentioned it briefly on BBC Radio Manchester on Thursday. It's odd that it hasn't been publicised in the way that other rule changes are though.
