For many years fans of other clubs, particular the envious green eyed red veed ones have been trying to convince all and sundry that the only reason Wigan had success in the late 80's early 90's was due to us being professional and that they were all part time.
On Red Vee a poster put this link to a game v Leeds in 1992.

Well have a look at the profession of the Saints try scorers that day.

| Beltin that rouges. How much faster did saints look than leeds? And ray french is gonna be missed on the bbc, fab commentator. Going back to that game always thought sonny nickle would have been a great signing for wigan, surprised we never went for him, even though we did,nt need him but said the same about cowie and mginty and they turned out to be awesome.

I don't have to watch the video to know it says "Professional RL player". I remember at the time watching these games on the BBC and seeing little pen pictures of the players listing their profession. It was never part time RL player!

It did say their profession if they had one though.
i.e
Ian Lucas - Antiques dealer
etc.

Ray French (along with Alex Murphy) was possibly the worst Rugby League commentator of all time. He made the game a laughing stock for decades.
Eddie and Stevo for perhaps the first ten years were a breath of fresh air, albeit they have had their time and degenerated into cliches and mediocrity.
Back on original topic I will never forget Window cleaner Ged Byrne having his occupation listed by the BBC as "Vision technition". Class.

You may not have liked Ray French as a commentator but when he took over from Eddie Waring he too was considered a breath of fresh air at the time. Waring never played the game and it was felt that Ray French being not only a dual code international but also a school teacher and coach offered a lot more knowledge than Waring. This last bit is debateable as Eddie Waring was a great proselytizer for the game.
Commentators who carry on for too long run the risk of lapsing into cliche, as it is not that easy to do, but easy to criticise - a bit like refereeing actually.
