Mellor and Powell for a long time have been tipped as the long term half back pairing for the future. I dont watch the reserves and have only seen glimpses of them when used in the first team, but is it likely to happen and more importanty are they good enough. Isnt this Mellor 2nd serious injury or was that Powell that did his knee ( IIRC)

I don't think the severity of Mellor's injury has been confirmed yet so hopefully it's not as bad as it seemed at the time. It was Mellor who had the knee injury but Powell is also missing at the moment after breaking his leg.

Mellor before his injury had a reasonable chance of stepping up to the first team but after the knee injury he hasn't looked the same player and doesn't seem as confident running with the ball. Another injury is the last thing that he needed.

I think Powell still has a good chance of making it in the first team but the injury might have set him back a little. I would have liked to have seen him go out on loan by this point but obviously that hasn't been able to happen.

There was also a good halfback called Chris Taylor who stepped up to the under 20's last year but I haven't heard much of him since then so I'm guessing he's out injured too.

Taylor played at U18 and U20 last season and looked a decent prospect. He has a bad injury and has been out for around 12 months. I spoke to him on the coach going down to Wembley last year for the CC Final and he said it would probably be at least a year before he could play again.

Sam Powell has had the cast off his leg so should be back playing soon.

That's a fair summary in my book CP. These guys are going to have to stake a claim because the club will fasttrack Williams and Hampshire.

Both only seventeen years of age and immensely talented. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they progress. There's also Joe Burgess who could be the ideal replacement for Pat Richards in a couple of years time, he can motor.

To be honest I cant really see Powell or Mellor making it at Wigan and think that Williams and Hampshire will be the next ones to come through at half back.

I think Powell has a good enough rugby brain and is strong enough defensively to offer back up at hooker and I think that might get him some opportunities in the first team. I don't think either Tomkins or Carberry will be good enough and we're relying a lot on McIlorum staying fit. Of course you can never be sure with hookers, I mean McIlorum has only recently started to fulfil his potential and play consistently well but McIlorum did stand out at reserve level if I remember correctly.
