In a brand new feature for Running Rugby, our resident "Secret Scoffer" will be visiting Stobart Super League grounds across the country in a quest to rate the product, service and value on offer. His/her journey began this week at the DW Stadium:

Where better to begin a survey of the rugby league public’s pie and pint options than at Wigan?

Versions differ on why Wiganers are known as Pie-eaters. It could refer to local miners who abandoned a strike and ate “humble pie.” Or it could just be that they eat a lot of pies. They certainly do on match day at the DW Stadium. There is a lengthy queue at the snack bar, which boasts the biggest pie-warmer I’ve seen in my life.

The classic Wigan pie is meat and potato, but chunky steak at the same price of £2.20 seems a better bet. The range, all baked by Poole’s of Wigan, also includes cheese, but the steak is the winner.

It ticks all the boxes; piping hot, crumbly pastry and plenty of meat in a rich gravy. Of course, it’s ridiculously expensive, but – hey – we’re on a Premier League football ground.

Annoyingly, you have to join a separate queue at the same bar to buy something to wash it down with.

This is where the experience deteriorates.

Worthington Creamflow (£3.20) is everything that was wrong with mass-produced beer before the glorious renaissance of small, local breweries – dazzlingly clear, with a thick head and tasting of absolutely nothing.

Wigan has at least two marvellous micro-breweries. Why not serve something from them and give the pies the accompaniment they deserve?

Wigan Food and Drink Facts

In 2011, Wigan Warriors average attendance for home matches was 17,193 and their highest attendance was 24,057 vs St Helens. Wigan informed Running Rugby that at the bigger games they sell between 5000 and 6000 pints of beer and upto 2500 pies.

Poole's of Wigan Ltd have been supplying the pies at the DW since the stadium opened in 1999. They have six fast food kiosks in which these pies are distributed.

Moslon Coors UK, the UK's second largest brewer, provides the eight stadium bars with both Carling and Worthington Creamflow.

A lot of people seem happy with the "beer" on sale in the stadium. Personally I wouldn't go within a mile of it. The microbrewery option would be too good to be true so I wouldn't waste time agonising myself about this dream option. Don't Saints have some quality beer on sale at their place?

I think I read that Saints have a deal with Robinsons brewery for Langtree Park. Be a damn sight better than queuing 15mins for a can of Tetley's at Knowsley Road if so.

Would be great to have something like that at Robin Park, but seeing as the bars around the ground (South Stand, lounges etc) only serve the same dreck, I'll not hold my breath!

Worthington's Extra Cold - I mean, really... icon_beat.gif

Dan Sarginson: "This is a fantastic opportunity for me to join the biggest name in the competition" 18/10/2013 Tony Clubb: "This is a new exciting chapter of my life signing for Wigan and I couldn't be happier" 18/10/2013 Romain Navarrete: “I’m very happy to have signed for Wigan Warriors. As soon I knew that Wigan were interested, they were the only team that I wanted to sign for. To me, Wigan is the biggest Club in Rugby League and it will be an honour to pull on the famous Cherry-and-White jersey next year. I look forward to working with Shaun Wane and the players at Wigan.”:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_10172.jpg

Conroy - Being a Latics fan i'm already immune to watching sh*te. Sally Cinnamon - Treat the Saints forum as you would if you met a girl from St Helens. Best policy would be to avoid altogether but if you absolutely can't resist temptation then take every possible precaution.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_36121.jpg

That was just the west stand; had they have measured the prawn sandwich and campari section after Messers Barclay and Rouse had been there then the numbers would have looked very different!

Indeed they have. They sell a beer there called 'Saints Gold' which my mate says is rather good.
Great game of rugby league. Fantastic atmosphere, Wigan were breathtaking and dominant in all areas for the first 25 minutes, coupled with us making alot of dumb mistakes, then fortunately they brought McIlorum on which helped us back into the game. I thought some of the tries we scored to get us within two we're out of this world stuff. Towards the end we had to force it a little and we had a few things go wrong, i.e Monas kick on the first for King and Solomona going off who was causing havoc. Wigan were clinical in their eventual execution of us. Proud of Wire today and gave us a little glimpse to the future. Silverwood was awful as per, but I expect no less. Tomkins is a world class player and by far the best english player in SL. Wigan are a champion side and would be a worthy winner of taking our title as challenge cup. Good luck over the next month and a bit.
:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_23997.jpg

That lager on the ground is like paying £3.20 for a bass shandy you go on the ground tuned in and leave sober with a banging head

Your opinion of course which you are entitled to, but how do you think food and drinks service, quality and costs are improved just by sitting back and going with the "creamflow" ?

You dont say nowt to anyone you will continue to get the same old same old, and in todays cost concious environment people want more bang for there buck !
